Joan Janzen of Valley Center won a new electric coffee maker given away by Valley Rexall Drug. She was a second-grade teacher at West Elementary School.

Bev Armstrong of Valley Center won the Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus given away by West's IGA.

Sally Carlson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred D. Carlson of Valley Center, was selected as assistant campus editor of the University Daily Kansan, the University of Kansas' student newspaper, for spring semester. She was a junior at K.U.

Mrs. Sara Richardson of rural Valley Center was the lucky winner of a $5,000 chinchilla fur coat compliments of IGA. She was having Christmas Eve dinner at the Jack Richardson home when her name was announced on the KAKE-TV IGA Show For Dough program.


40 years ago

Jayhawk Lumber on West Main reported its fence was damaged during the night. Police thought a train had run over the fence.

Steve Ward of Valley Center won a macramé hanging given away in a drawing by the Valley Center Business and Professional Women. Proceeds from the drawing went to a scholarship fund.


35 years ago

Valley Center farmer Clair Evans won second place in the Kansas soybean production contest. Evans received $150, a trophy and a plaque from the Kansas Soybean Association Growers.

The Valley Center Police Department got its Christmas wish a day early when A-1 Propane came through with the long-awaited propane systems for the city's two patrol cars. Christmas Eve Day was the first full day of operation for one of the squad cars.


30 years ago

Kimberly Cooper and Steve Fitzmaurice received degrees from Emporia State University.

Army Sgt. Jerry D. Smith, son of Marjorie Smith, arrived for duty with the First Armored Division in West Germany.

25 years ago

Jill Ramsey, daughter of Bill and Pamela Ramsey of Wichita, was a member of the Tabor College concert band in Hillsboro.

Carin Hoover and Spike Anderson were inducted into Golden Key Honor Society at Wichita State University. Membership is limited to no more than the top 15 percent of juniors and seniors at the university.

Kathleen K. Walker of Valley Center received a master of science degree at the end of the fall session at Emporia State University.

Orris Ireland received the honorary member certificate given to CPAs who have been members of the AICPA for 50 years.


15 years ago

Pilot Tommy George of Valley Center had given more than 800 young people a free demonstration airplane ride as part of the FAA Aviation Foundation's "Young Eagles" program.

Jack McCarthy, a 68-year-old long-distance walker, spoke to the Valley Center Diabetes Support Group at Wheatland Elementary. McCarthy had diabetes for 65 years.

Thomas Etheredge was named the "Newsmaker of 2006" by The Ark Valley News. The Wild West World amusement park was scheduled to open in May 2007.

The Dine-In Divas, a local cooking club featuring Lisa Binau of Valley Center and founder DonnaJo Hunsinger of Bel Aire, appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Developer Johnny Stevens made an offer to buy the vacant Kansas Coliseum and lease it to the National Institute of Aviation Research. The Park City council approved a resolution to determine the advisability of issuing industrial revenue bonds for financing the acquisition, construction and equipping of a commercial facility at the coliseum property.
