Many reasons to say thanks Last Updated: November 23, 2016 As we count our blessings before the Thanksgiving holiday, we realize that in Valley Center, there is plenty for which to be thankful. Look around. We are grateful that the residents in Valley Center, despite all of their differences, have a heart for people. They respond to needs with generosity and kindness. Not a month goes by that we don't hear of a fundraiser or charity event designed to help a child or a family. Businesses are always willing to sponsor some good cause. Schools, too, get in on the act as students are encouraged to look beyond their own concerns and recognize that we're all in this together. It's such a valuable lesson to learn. We're thankful for a proactive city government that is planning for the future as it takes care of the community's needs today. Valley Center is just about to turn dirt on a $2 million community center that will house the library, community events and the senior center. It's been a long time coming, too. A new or expanded library has been a point of discussion for more than 20 years. A new community center has been discussed for more than 10 years. The effort got a boost when volunteers with the Friends of the Library worked hard to raise more than $500,000 this year to bring the library's contribution to $1 million. The school district, too, is embarking on $18 million worth of projects to renovate and expand its facilities as well as make them safer. We are thankful for the bricks and mortar of the district. We are also thankful for the dedication of the district's teachers and staff. The community's most valuable resources are being shaped by these educators. We are thankful for new businesses, a renewed energy around the historic downtown district through the Main Street Valley Center program and a commitment to smart and measured growth through the city council. It's a good time to be in Valley Center. We are thankful. — The Ark Valley News |
