Mike Cowan, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Cowan of rural Sedgwick, won the $300 jackpot in the Valley Center Merchants' Thursday Night Promotion. He graduated from Valley Center High School in 1966 and was employed at the Valley Center KwikShop.

Ramona Evans spent her last day on the job at Park School in Valley Center. She was the principal's secretary and would be missed by all the students.


45 years ago

Stacia Miles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Miles, volunteered to be sawed in half at the Zogi TV Variety Revue family road show held in the Valley Center High School auditorium.

Pvt. Bradley L. Yoakum, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Yoakum of Valley Center, completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Army Training Center, Infantry, Fort Polk, La.


40 years ago

Mr. and Mrs. Al Hobson and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Brown attended a football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Karen Bradshaw's junior high newspaper staff visited KFDI Radio, KTVH-TV, the Sedgwick County Commission meeting, the new Wichita City Hall building and the Wichita Eagle-Beacon.

35 years ago

Joe Carothers received a trip to Puerto Rico and was named one of Farm Bureau Insurance's best salesmen.

The Furley Card Club met with Mr. and Mrs. Glen Berg. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. John Snodgrass, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ziegler and Mr. and Mrs. Danny Smith.


30 years ago

Orris Ireland was named an honorary member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Chris Griffith won the quilt given away during the Terning's annual Steam and Gas Engine Show. The quilt was made by Tom Terning's mother and sister. Proceeds went to missionary work in Africa.


25 years ago

Sgt. Roger K. (Kurt) Ashpole, son of Raymond and Julie Ashpole, received the Navy Commendation Medal from the Marine Corps for service during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He graduate from Valley Center High School in 1981.

The annual Holiday Home Tour, sponsored by the Valley Center Historical & Cultural Society, took place at the homes of Eston and Donna Ash, Dale and Shirley Padding and June and Ralph Spencer.


20 years ago

Strong winds damaged Park City structures during a storm that hit the area. The roof and east wall of the new senior center under construction collapsed during the storm.

High winds also heavily damaged the roof of the USD 262 bus barn on South Park. No buses were damaged. The roof on the south side addition to the original structure was destroyed.

Leah Wilbur of Valley Center was inducted into the Alpha Chi chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron national honor society at Kansas State University.

West librarian Sherri Barbo was cheering for the Conway Springs football team, which won the Class 3A state title. Her husband, Mike, was an assistant coach and son Josh was a junior on the team.


10 years ago

A former Valley Center High School football player was among the all-conference selections in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Brock DeLong received second-team accolades as a fullback for Butler Community College.

Valley Center city workers installed a sign in front of City Hall. The sign's installation was part of a $500,000 project to expand and update City Hall.


5 years ago

The new headquarters for Murphy Tractor and Equipment Company opened at the southeast corner of 53rd North and I-135 in Park City this week.

In an early morning traffic stop at the Best Western motel property at 53rd North and I-135, a Wichita Police Department K-9 bit a man who fled the scene of an accident. The man was transported to the hospital with bite wounds.
