Ellie Shank serves during a match this season. The freshman was named first-team all-league. Freshman, seniors all-league volleyball By Randy Fisher Last Updated: November 17, 2016 Ellie Shank highlighted a quartet of Valley Center High School players named to the 2016 Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II all-league volleyball team. An outside hitter, Shank is the first Hornet freshman picked as all-league since Emily Otte received honorable mention in 2008. Three seniors also made the elite squad. Middle hitter Emily Klusener was on the second team, while outside hitter Miranda Dessenberger and setter Kailey Pearson received honorable mention. Klusener made the second team for the third straight year. Dessenberger joined her on the second team last year, while Pearson also received honorable mention in 2015. "They all deserve these awards because of their hard work and strong leadership all season," coach Holly Rutter said. Shank led the Hornets with 306 kills, 54 aces and a 2.45 passing average. She was second with a 95.8 percent service and 195 digs. She also hit .222 on the season. Klusener gradually improved and developed into a force in the middle. She led the team with a .358 attack and 64 blocks. Additionally, she was third with 165 kills and 27 aces, while serving at 92.3 percent. Pearson quarterbacked Valley's offense with 675 assists. She was second with 35 aces and third with 94.5 percent service and 141 digs, and fourth in hitting at .286. Although she missed several matches at the end of the season with a concussion, Dessenberger still recorded 82 kills and 14 blocks. After her injury against Maize South, she remained an inspirational force on the bench for her teammates. |
