Teams of volunteers spruce up schools and city park

Teams of volunteers spread across Valley Center Oct. 15, painting parking lots and fire hydrants, for the first Serve VC event.

Six local churches teamed up with the school district and the city for a morning of service.

Groups worked at the intermediate school and the high school as well as Lions Park, where benches and tables were painted and mulch was spread around trees.

A couple of groups also went around the city painting hydrants fire engine red.

"We enjoy just helping out and doing different things in the community," said Stacy Matias, who was painting a picnic table in Lions Park. "We try to chip in when anyone in the church needs something."

Participating churches were Valley Center Christian Church, LifePoint, Grace Connections, Faith, First United Methodist Church and Riverlawn.

About 225 people signed up for the four-hour project.
