Balloons for Bellalynn to raise awareness
By The News Staff
Last Updated: June 16, 2016

The Valley Center family of a young girl with a rare affliction will host the third annual Balloons for Bellalynn at 6:30 p.m. June 23 at Lions Park. The event is designed to raise awareness about Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that has no cure.

The event honors Bellalyn Smith, granddaughter of Bob and Denise Appelhans of Valley Center.

Bellalynn was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome in 2013. Her family said Bellalynn has fought "hard for her life multiple times" since she was diagnosed.

She has had thousands of seizures, some as short as one second and some as long as three hours.

Dravet also causes speech and developmental delays, orthopedic and balance issues as well as sleeping difficulties and an increased risk of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy.
