Nancy Anderson, president of the Friends of the Valley Center Public Library, holds a sample of a brick that will be placed in the community center's patio to recognize donors.

Campaign begins for community center funds

Supporters of a new library and community center in Valley Center can see some light at the end of a long tunnel.

That's why they're enthusiastic as they kick off a summer campaign to raise the funds to complete the project.

The campaign to secure $500,000 in donations will start on June 1.

"We're hoping that people are generous," said Nancy Anderson, president of the Friends of the Valley Center Public Library. "… It's going to be more than just a library. Hopefully, it will be a good community building, a nice new facility for all of Valley Center to use."

The campaign got a boost recently when an anonymous donor pledged $100,000 in matching funds toward the campaign through June 30.

The Friends group has developed a manageable way to reach their goal.

Anderson said the group has started the K Club, looking for 500 people to commit $1,000 each toward the project. Club members will receive a brick for engraving and placement in a patio at the new Community Center.

Donations, which are tax-deductible, can be made in two or four payments over two years, Anderson said.

Of course, any size of donation is always welcome, Anderson said, mentioning memorial, recognition and planned gifts.

Along with a library, the Community Center, which will be in Lions Park, will house space for the Valley Center Senior Association meetings and activities. It also will include meeting rooms and space that can be rented by the public.

The city has dedicated $1 million toward the Community Center and asked the library to come up with another $1 million to get the project started. The Friends of the Library organization has raised $500,000 since it began discussing expansion needs 20 years ago.

Ice cream social June 12

The Friends of the Valley Center Public Library will host an ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. June 12 in Lions Park.

The event will include free ice cream, a touch-a-truck event with a variety of vehicles that children can explore, a concert by Highway 35 (which includes former Valley Center resident Mike Vermillion) and information about the Community Center fundraising campaign.
