50 years ago

Alan Whetzel of Valley Center was named the high school basketball coach of the year by the Area Coaches Association. The association picked coaches of the year after each prep athletic season and held its dinner at Brown's Grill in Wichita.

Valley Center resident physician and surgeon Robert M. Daniels M.D accepted the position of director of emergency room services at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Because of his new responsibilities, Dr. Daniels planned to discontinue private practice and close his office in Valley Center.


45 years ago

Valley Center's Jeanne Daniels was named to the second team girl's Class 3A state basketball team. The sophomore forward was also a unanimous selection to the All-Chisholm Trail League team.

Junior forward Tom Dawson, Valley Center's leading scorer on the season, was named to the All-Chisholm Trail League basketball team.


40 years ago

Vicki Everitt was crowned champ at the junior high spelling bee. The word she spelled correctly to win was "obscure." Vicki, along with Dianna Builta from West and Shelley Rothenberger from Abilene, was to compete at Pleasant Valley Junior High. Becky Brooner placed second and Mark Henman third in the junior high spelling bee.

Senior Curt Nickelson and sophomore Sam Edmundson were the top finishers for the Valley Center High School boys track and field team at the state indoor meet in Manhattan. Nickelson won the only medal for the Hornets, finishing third in the 60-yard dash. His 6.6-second time tied him with the second-place medalist and was 0.1 second slower than the winner. Edmundson failed to qualify in the 60-yard dash, but his 8.5-second clocking in the 70-yard low hurdles was good for fifth.


35 years ago

Mark Dennett, son of Ken and Betty Dennett, was one of three Wichita area students named as University Leader scholars at Wichita State University. Dennett, a senior at Valley Center High School, received a $3,000 four-year scholarship.

Terry James, daughter of Betty and Delmer James of Valley Center, was one of 35 students selected from more than 200 eligible students as a member of Mortar Board, a national senior honorary for the 1981-82 academic year. She was a junior at Fort Hays State University.


30 years ago

Julie Adrian placed first in editing at the state journalism contest in Lawrence. Stephany Willis, who competed in headline writing, did not place. Michelle Edgmon had qualified for the contest but was unable to attend.

A balloon released by third-grader Sean Eslinger was found by a 4-year-old in Crowley, La., 40 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. The balloon was released as part of drug awareness month by Valley Center grade schoolers.


25 years ago

The 1991 Miss Center City Scholarship Pageant winner, Teri Lynn Stiverson, was hard at work preparing for the Miss Kansas Pageant.

Abilene Elementary fifth-grader Brett Thiessen placed fourth in problem solving at the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics math contest at McPherson College. Thiessen competed against 42 students from across the state. He was the only Valley Center student to advance to the state competition.


20 years ago

Joan House, of Valley Center, retired from teaching after 31 years with Valley Center schools. He taught at Park, Abilene and Wheatland schools.

A 19-year-old former Park City resident was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Valley Center Police Department and the Butler County Drug Task Force. Joshua M. Thomas, of rural Augusta, was charged with theft, possession of stolen property and drug trafficking, according to Sgt. Alan Sherry.


15 years ago

After 45 years, Valley Center fire chief Bob Tormey retired. His father-in-law, Wayne Carnahan, was assistant fire chief. Tormey became fire chief in 1971, and three of his sons and one grandson eventually joined the department.

Air National Guard Senior Airman Aaron R. Mark, son of Randy and Diana Mark of Valley Center, was named outstanding airman of the year. Selection was based on his exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement and other accomplishments. He was an aerospace control and warning systems operator with the 134th Air Central Squadron at McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita.


10 years ago

Valley Center senior Dustin Phelps received another postseason award for basketball. After being selected to the all-league team, Phelps was chosen for the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State team. Coach Brett Flory said he was proud of Phelps' selection.

Nick Parsons, son of Terry and Sherry Parsons, received a trustee scholarship from Newman University in Wichita. He planned to graduate from Valley Center High School in May and would be a student at Newman in the fall.


5 years ago

Davon Nicole Brown was listed on the University of Oklahoma's fall 2010 semester honor roll. In order to be listed on the honor roll, a student needed to be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and earn a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average.

Valley Center middle school students in the industrial arts class and teacher Mickey Harvey built a wooden bench as part of a Technology Student Association project. The bench would be used at the front entrance of the school. Students involved in the project were Josh Doppler, Ty Banning, Tyler McLure, Remington Greider-Little and Ryan McCalla.
