Gavin Reeves, a freshman from Valley Center, and Shane Garrison, a junior from Kechi, were named Capitol Federal Scholars during a Dec. 1 luncheon at Emporia State University's Sauder Alumni Center.

Emporia State was the first of seven Kansas higher education institutions to partner with the Capitol Federal Foundation in a scholarship program preparing business students for the challenges of the future.

Since the program was established in 2002, the Capitol Federal Foundation has given almost $600,000 in scholarships to Emporia State. The Capitol Federal Scholars program recognizes high-achieving students within ESU's School of Business. In 2013, the Capitol Federal Athletic Scholars Fund awarded scholarships to outstanding student-athletes.

Each scholarship is renewable annually, meaning a student who earns the scholarship as a freshman remains eligible through graduate school as long as he or she maintains the required minimum 3.25 GPA.

Molly Wierman, of Wichita, was one of 38 University of Dallas students to present her "Junior Poet" project. These presentations are the culmination of intensive research and writing on a major English-language poet and are required of all English majors in order to satisfy degree requirements, though students from other majors choose to take the course as well. Wierman's presentation was on the poetry of T.S. Eliot.
