MARILYN SHARP

Marilyn C. "Mickey" Mitchell Sharp, 88, of Manhattan, died Dec. 2, 2015. She was retired from Kansas State University.

She was born Aug. 12, 1927, to Parker Vinton Mitchell and Charlotte Frances Leitch Mitchell on a farm near Parkerville in Morris County. She graduated from Parkerville High School in 1944 and earned an emergency teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College that same year. She began teaching at 16, mostly in one-room schoolhouses in Kelso, White City,  Oak Grove and Moehlman Bottom. She married Horace J. "Jim" Sharp on Oct. 19, 1946, in Parkerville. After raising three children, she worked part-time at Blue Valley Methodist Church. She worked full-time in the College of Education at Kansas State University from 1969 until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the Extension Homemakers Gingham Gals Unit, Ogden Friendship House, United Methodist Women and both the Blue Valley and College Avenue United Methodist churches.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother John Mitchell. Survivors include her husband; children Janet (Robert) Robinson of Valley Center, Doug (Pauline) Sharp of Wichita and Brian (Jeanny) Sharp of Ottawa; grandchildren Lindsay Goode, Betsy Machain, Dustin Sharp, Evan Sharp, Jandee Kruse, Tyler Sharp and Ashleigh Sharp; nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Carolee Mitchell of Prairie Village.

Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11 at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Ave., Manhattan.

Memorials have been established for the Alzheimer's Association, Ogden Friendship House and College Avenue United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
