Eighth-graders get first win, seventh grade still searching By The News staff Last Updated: December 10, 2015 Opening the 2015-16 season, the Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams played at Salina South Dec. 1, at home against Hutchinson Dec. 3 and at Derby North Dec. 7. The Hornets will stay on the road for games at Andover Dec. 10 and at Maize South Dec. 14. Eighth grade The eighth-grade "A" team fell to 1-2 with losses against Salina South and Derby North sandwiched around a convincing win over Hutchinson. Valley Center played Salina South close, but couldn't get the edge as the Hornets fell 44-36. Valley Center trailed by one after the first quarter and by four at the half. Salina South outscored the Hornets 20-16 in the second half for the final margin. Jakob Byrne led the Hornets with 13 points. Ray Flora chipped in eight and Wyatt Redburn five. Mason Burns and Caleb Fisher had three each, while Caden Holle and Mason Reed had two each. The Hornets rebounded to defeat Hutchinson, 45-28. Byrne paced Valley Center with 10 points. Redburn and Fisher had eight each. Bryan Rascon finished with six. Reed had three, while Holle and Matt Patterson had one each. At Derby North, Valley Center fell 43-35. Byrne had 13 points, Redburn nine and Burns seven. Reed, Flora and Rascon had two each. The eighth-grade "B" team is 2-0. The Hornets did not play against Salina South. Patterson went off for 20 points to lead Valley Center to a 30-12 victory over Hutchinson. Ethan Phillips added six, while Justin Gulledge and Bryson Mosher had two each. Valley Center defeated Derby North 39-26. Patterson had 12 points. Jace Crass finished with eight, Mosher, Phillips and Josiah Farney four each, Wyatt Hager, Josh Dessenberger and Jerod Payne two each and Gulledge one. Seventh grade The seventh-grade "A" team is seeking its first victory after falling to Salina South, Hutchinson and Derby North. The game was never in doubt against Salina South. The Hornets fell behind early and ended with a 52-27 loss. Salina South extended an 11-5 first-quarter lead to 21-11 at the half. The Hornets were outscored 31-16 in the second half. Eli Isaacs led Valley Center with seven points. Kaleb Harden had five. Braden Dalrymple and Gabe Phillips had four each, Austin Coash three, Caleb Peach two and Jesse Johnson two. Valley Center lost a close one to Hutchinson, 46-41. Dalrymple finished with 10 points. Harden had eight, Isaacs seven, Phillips and Hunter Sharp six each and Coash four. The Hornets were on the wrong side of a 38-28 final against Derby North. Harden had nine in the loss, while Phillips had eight, Sharp and Coash four each and Isaacs three. The seventh-grade "B" team got the only win for the Hornets on opening night, beating Salina South 16-15. Brandon Wiedeman hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to pull ahead by one for the victory. Wiedeman finished with seven points to lead the Hornets. Dominic Phillips had six, Hunter Stacy two and Wyatt Taylor one. The game was tied after the first quarter and Salina South snuck ahead by one at half time. Valley Center evened the game at 11-11 in the third quarter and then outscored Salina South 5-4 in the fourth. Valley Center fell to 1-2 with losses to Hutchinson and Derby North. In the 25-17 loss to Hutchinson, Stacy had nine points, Jesse Johnson five and Taylor three. In the 25-21 loss to Derby North, Wiedeman had eight points, Phillips six, Stacy three, and Dylan Dunn and Titus Elsner two each. |
