Devin Delforge pins Goddard's Gabe Holmes in the championship dual at 106 pounds. Delforge went 5-0 in the Dec. 5 dual tournament.

Hornets finish second at December Duals

Valley Center High School hosted the annual December Duals Dec. 5. Eight other teams competed at the tournament, including Emporia, Andover Central, Douglass, Goddard, Great Bend, Heights, Bishop Carroll and Kansas City-Turner.

The Hornets were able to easily handle Emporia, Bishop Carroll and Great Bend before falling in the finals to 5A State favorite, Goddard. The boys took second after the 39-24 loss, but facing such a talented team this early in the season could prove to be a crucial experience for the Valley Center team by the time the state tournament rolls around in February.

Assistant coach Tate Lowe talked about the team's performance and what it meant to face a tough Goddard team on the first day of the season.

"You always want to wrestle the best," he said. "They're going to show you where you need to improve. It's always good to see teams like them early and see them as much as you can because the only way you improve is to be put in situations where you have to battle. I think it's a good measuring stick. I thought we wrestled well against them but some of our kids could do a little bit better. I think the name got to them a little bit but we'll go in and get to work and move on."

One of the highlights of the day for the Hornets was freshman Devin Delforge, who went 5-0 at 106 pounds. He had three pins and a tech fall. Lowe was impressed with the performance.

"He really stepped up — going undefeated," he said. "He wrestled way above where you'd think a first-time freshman would. He did everything we asked and more. It was a nice surprise and it's a really good starting point for his freshman year."

Also performing well was senior Ryan Delforge, who went 4-1 at 145 pounds. He had three pins and a major decision. His only loss came at the hands of state favorite, Kameron Frame, on a major decision.

"It was my first time wrestling in that weight," he said. "I was wondering how I was going to do. I thought I did pretty well, but until I wrestled Frame, I didn't know what I was going to get from him. Now I know."

Junior Don Boone also went 4-1 at 160 pounds. He had two pins and a tech fall, but was called for stalling late in the match during the finals — which proved to be the deciding point in a 2-1 decision.

"I thought I did pretty good this weekend," he said, "but it sucks to lose knowing I got called for stalling rather than actually having him take me down. Next time I wrestle him I'm hoping to win and not get any stalling calls."

Junior Sam Weldon went 4-1 at 182 pounds. Weldon had four pins.

Junior Brett Hamm was 4-1 at 195 pounds. Hamm finished with two pins and one decision.

Valley Center's 220-pounder, junior Chase Holle, went 4-1 with one pin and one decision.

Heavyweight Tom Adams had a good day, going 5-0 for the Hornets. Adams had three pins.

The Hornets will get another shot at Goddard in an AVCTL II dual at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at Goddard High School. The next day the boys will head out of town for a couple of days for the Colby Tournament.
