The View from Sunflower Gardens By Marilyn Bentley Last Updated: November 12, 2015 A lot is happening in November Among the dear hearts and gentle people here are the book readers. We enjoy a variety of novels, mysteries and biographies in our library here. Wise words: "The best sermons are lived, not preached." — Anonymous "Ability is important but dependability is crucial." — Anonymous "You cannot ‘unsay' a cruel word." — Anonymous "Don't pray for rain if you will complain about the mud." — Anonymous "The key to happiness is not the key that fits the ignition of a car." — Anonymous "If your lips would keep from slips — five things observe with care — of whom you speak, to whom you speak — and how, and when and where." — Anonymous. What a glorious month is November. It's for elections, veterans and thanksgiving. There is much to be thankful for at Sunflower: good health, new friends and family. 1 Corinthians 15:57 says: "Thanks be to God. He gives us the victory." We do know who to be thankful to. We still like our Monday coffee chats, Tuesday Bible study, game nights and music concerts, and potluck dinners. Get well soon to our folks who are under the weather. Soon the grandkids will be playing basketball. They will "shoot baskets, shoot for the moon, be shooting pictures, shoot the breeze and see shooting stars." — Anonymous It's always Thanksgiving Day. "A little girl gave thanks at the table. ‘Thank you, God, for this beautiful day.' Her mom said, ‘But it's pouring rain.' The girl said: ‘You should never judge a day by its weather.' " — Anonymous Thanksgiving is a holiday and an attitude. On our Friday night hymn sing-alongs we enjoy seasonal songs, patriotic songs and old Christmas carols. Soon, in Walmart and other stores, they will offer gifts for sharing and wearing at Christmas. For an audience sing-along: "Away in a Manger," "Deck the Halls," "O' Come, All Ye Faithful," "Jingle Bells," "Joy to the World," and "O' Little Town of Bethlehem." At every season, we decorate our building for the times and seasons and holidays. Lots of pumpkins and colored leaves are now on display. Soon we see red and holly and even mistletoe. Our folks enjoy our monthly potluck dinners of special salads, breads, meat, vegetables, pie, cake and other treats. Since we are Kansans, we are thankful for cows, horses, eagles, sheep and turkeys — and good cropland, gas and oil — and our airplane industry. We are thankful also for good churches, schools, hospitals and housing developments. We are glad for road repair, cops and Kansas kids. There are plenty of TV shows and options for entertainment in Sedgwick County. We are glad for an alert military fort system. God bless America. We like our many sports opportunities, both amateur and pro. Remember: "Be kind, anyway." — Mother Teresa |
