City to purchase new holiday decorations
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: September 17, 2015

Downtown Valley Center will be a little brighter this holiday season.

The Valley Center City Council on Sept. 15 approved the purchase of a couple of dozen light pole holiday decorations to be hung along Main and Meridian.

The decorations will replace some of the current ones that are 26 years old and falling apart.

The city will spend $20,000 from its economic development fund to purchase the lighted decorations.

The council's vote was unanimous.

"It's something sorely in need," said council member Jake Jackson.

Other council members agreed.

Al Hobson said the current decorations were in bad shape and they reflected a poor image on Valley Center.

"It's a poor representation of our city," he said.

Neal Owings, the city's parks and public buildings director, said the decorations in the best shape will be salvaged and reused.

He said the city started with 40 decorations and is now down to 20 usable ones. Of those, the lights on only 13 work.

"They're in pretty sad shape," Owings said.

He said the new decorations would be a starting point in developing a strategy to brighten the downtown area. He said city officials have discussed future purchases in partnership with the chamber of commerce.

"This would basically be a kick-start to something like that," Owings said.

Owings said the decorations will be purchased in time to hang during the coming holiday season.

In other business Sept. 16, the council:

•Gave first-round approval to the standard traffic offense ordinance.

•Approved Mayor Laurie Dove's appointment of Betty Clausel to a four-year term on the Valley Center Public Library Board.

•Learned that the city council will have a joint meeting with the Valley Center school board on Oct. 20 at the District Office. The two will discuss ways to collaborate on community issues. The council will meet at 6 p.m.
