With strong winds and oppressive heat, conditions were not favorable for golf at the Valley Center tournament Sept. 15 at Hesston Golf Park.

Nonetheless, the girls stayed positive, said coach Mike McCormick, who was pleased with many of the performances.

"It was good to see some consistency in our scores," he said.

There were four teams in the field, with Winfield and Maize South, both strong programs, providing lots of competition for the young Hornets.

In team standings, Winfield came in first with 184, Maize South was second with 206, Valley Center Purple was third with 230 and Valley Center Gold was fourth with 283.

The Hornets' best performances were turned in by a trio of girls on the Purple squad: Lakyn Lynn and Katie Mitchell both had 55s and Hannah Arneson was only a stroke behind with a 56. Edie Reese had a 64 to round out the Purple squad's efforts.

For the gold team, MaKenna Tennysen had a 63, Grace Williams recorded a 71, Loryn Smith notched a 74 and Kelsi Miller rounded out the field with a 75.

McCormick cited Mitchell and Lynn for winning their first medals of the season.

Arneson also would have medaled had it not been for a hard time on the first two holes, he said.

"She really rebounded well, even getting a birdie on a brutal Par 5 into the wind," McCormick said. "The elements were tough. It was very hot and strongest winds of the year so far."

McCormick estimates that the wind factor cost each player an extra five shots.

"Take that away and we have 50, 50, 51 going for us, which is getting really close to where we want to be," he said.
