Middle school football teams split games with Maize South
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 10, 2015

The Valley Center Middle School football teams went 2-2 in games against Maize South during the past week.

Both "A" teams lost to Maize South on the road Sept. 3, while both "A" teams won at home Sept. 8.

Valley Center's "A" teams will host Andover Central Sept. 10 and Eisenhower Sept. 17, while the "B" teams play at Central Sept. 14 and at Eisenhower Sept. 21.

Eighth grade

The eighth-grade "A" team fell to Maize South 22-0.

Maize South led 14-0 at halftime on a 28-yard touchdown pass and a short field from a blocked punt.

The Hornets had a promising drive to start the second half, but a penalty stalled their progress. Maize South tacked on another touchdown to finish the game.

"It really felt like a first game," said coach Trent Preheim. "I felt like we were doing some really good things in practice, but under the lights we were just tentative. We were lacking a little bit of confidence and determination."

Preheim said the defensive line played well by shutting down the run game and the linebackers showed some willingness to play physically.

The eighth-grade "B" team defeated Maize South 6-0.

Valley Center's Reuben Raymundo scored a 30-yard touchdown run.

Seventh grade

The Valley Center seventh-grade "A" team fell to Maize South 18-6 on the road.

The Hornets' lone score came on a one-yard run by Kaleb Harden.

The Valley Center "B" team defeated Maize South 8-0.

Dominic Phillips scored a touchdown for the Hornets and Jarrett Bergman scored the two-point conversion.
