Last Updated: September 03, 2015

The Valley Center High School junior varsity tennis team kicked off the season Aug. 25 by competing in the six-team Buhler Invitational.

As a team, the Hornets tied Circle with nine points. Smoky Valley tallied 20 points to edge Eisenhower by one for the top spot. Then came Circle in third, Valley Center in fourth, Buhler fifth and Kingman sixth.

Individually, the No. 1 doubles team of junior Melissa Arnold and sophomore Katelynn Owens finished third. Placing fourth were freshman Jordan Truman at No. 1 singles, sophomore Heather Foster at No. 2 singles, and junior Olivia Logan and sophomore Cadence Ciecielski at No. 2 doubles.

"We gained needed experience with this team, and it really highlighted what we need to focus on with each player," said JV coach Matt Klusener.

At No. 1 singles, Truman went 1-3. She lost to Smoky Valley 8-1, beat Kingman 8-3 and lost the third-place match to Eisenhower 8-2.

At No. 2 singles Foster also went 1-3. She lost 8-0 to Smoky Valley, beat Kingman 8-2 and lost the third-place match to Circle 8-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Arnold and Owens were 2-2. They lost Smoky Valley 8-6 and beat Kingman 8-0 before edging Buhler 8-6 in the third-place match.

At No. 2 doubles, Logan and Ciecielski went 1-3. They lost to Smoky Valley 8-3, beat Kingman 8-0 and lost a tough third-place match to Buhler 8-7 (1).

The JV played Sept. 1 at McPherson but results were not available at news time.
