Meridian drainage to improve
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: August 28, 2015

Some good news and an oops this week in the $6.7 million reconstruction project on Meridian and Ford in Valley Center.

The good news is the underground stormwater drainage system should see some improvements by the end of next week, when crews install the last of the drainage boxes connecting the entire system. Flooding has dogged the construction zone this spring and summer.

City Engineer Josh Golka said when the boxes are in, all rain that falls on the affected area will go to the retention pond south of Ford (77th North). However, the permanent pumps to remove the water will not be online for several more weeks. Small, gas-powered pumps will be used in the meantime.

The oops centered on permanent signage, crosswalk markings and rights-of-way seeding. They were supposed to be finished last week, but a subcontractor delay pushed the projects to this week.

The signage also threw some confusion into the speed limit for Meridian and the construction zone. The 20 mph construction zone on Meridian (for both southbound and northbound traffic) is from the south entrance of Leeker's to Ramsey. The rest of Meridian north of Ramsey has been returned to 30 mph. Signs were unclear last week and earlier this week.

The following is the city's weekly update:

•Access to businesses along Ramsey is open with access from Meridian. Access to homes and businesses along Ford is open through Dollar General parking lot from Ramsey. Ford is currently closed to through traffic directly east of bridge over floodway to Meridian. Work along Ford scheduled through October.

•Pond grading south of Ford nearing completion. Drainage is now being directed to the pond as construction of storm sewer along Ford progresses.

•Concrete construction at pump station ongoing. Concrete outfall structure construction ongoing.

•Pavement demolition along Ford nearing completion. Road grading and reinforced concrete base construction to follow completion of storm sewer.

•Concrete channel improvements ongoing at Ford and railroad crossing.
