Driver with street sign arrested
By The News staff
Last Updated: August 20, 2015

A Wichita man was arrested Aug. 15 after Valley Center police officers stopped him in the 600 block of East Fifth in his truck while he was hauling a street sign.

The driver, Austin Spencer, told authorities that he found the "Spencer" street sign on the ground and he took it because it was his last name, police said. He denied removing the sign from its post, police said.

According to a police report, officers found several open containers of alcohol in Spencer's truck. Officers arrested Spencer on a charge of transporting an open container of alcohol.

Officers notified the Harvey County Sheriff's Office. The sign was taken from outside of Newton. Officer Eric Leeker met a deputy at the county line to return the sign.
