District wraps up successful summer programs By Chris Strunk Last Updated: August 20, 2015 More than 240 students participated in Valley Center's summer school program and dozens more took advantage of the district's summer meal service. The Valley Center school board heard reports on the two efforts during its meeting Aug. 17. Brianna Reyes, in her first year as director of summer school, said the 2015 session was a success. She reported that 29 students were enrolled in the Jumpstart kindergarten program, 17 in Kindergarten Carousel, 37 in reading for first and second grades, 50 in reading for third through fifth grades, 37 in math for first and second grades, 50 in math for third through fifth grades, 21 in math and 19 in reading for sixth through eighth grades, 53 in art, 38 in science, 53 in cooking and nutrition and 33 in technology. "We had an excellent staff," Reyes said. "They were engaged with the students all the time. It was awesome." The summer food service program served 1,120 breakfast meals in June and July and 3,691 lunches during the same period. Breakfast participation was up, but lunch numbers were down from last summer. This was the third year for the federally funded program. "It costs the district nothing, except to turn the lights on," Superintendent Cory Gibson said. In fact, the district will have $4,382 in operating capital left after paying expenses. The money will be used to purchase or upgrade kitchen equipment, Gibson said. "It's a great program for our community and our kids," he said. |
