The View from Sunflower Gardens
By Marilyn Bentley
Last Updated: July 15, 2015

Rev. Marshall's words still relevant

The most important part of bird watching is to have fun. You may not identify every bird. Just enjoy them.

Our folks are loyal to feeding birds with special birdseed. Our common backyard birds here are robins, blue jays, sparrows, mourning doves, blackbirds, cardinals and woodpeckers at Sunflower.

Mourning doves breed in all Kansas counties. It is a grayish brown.

There are hawks in many Kansas counties in rural areas.

Blue jays are most common in eastern areas of the state.

We see the Western Meadowlark, its song is a welcome melody all over Kansas.

Verse of the week: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believed in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

Here at Sunflower we like our coffee chats, potluck dinners, game nights, Bible study, jigsaw puzzles, music concerts, and walks in our halls and around the building.

It's July and wheat harvest is a busy time. At present, the wheat fields and cornfields of Kansas are lush and cattle are fat in pens. We need both rain and sunshine for Kansas crops and animals.

Pets are an important addition to happiness for some of our residents. They enjoy walking the dog but get exercise doing so.

We are glad for a variety of games played here. We like our library, too, with a variety of books.

Recently, I read of poems by and autobiography of the Rev. Peter Marshall. He was chaplain of the U.S. Senate in the 1940s. His words still ring from Capitol Hill: "It's time we put the Bible back into our government. It is only by living under God's blessing and guidance that we can ever hope to add any ‘New Glory' to ‘Old Glory.' "

Jan. 6, 1947: "We pray that thou will bless these men (congressmen) chosen by the people of this nation. God knows our needs, our hopes, our fears. We need thy strength and wisdom greater than our own.

"Give us grace to think not what we can get, but what we can give. That a new spirit may come to Congress — in our work here — with a new vision and a new purpose.

"May we remember that it takes time to build a nation, as it takes time to build a tree.

"We pray for our president, the cabinet, judges of the land, with God to rule their hearts." — Peter Marshall

We pray for all our troops wherever they are and their families.

Did you know? Engraved on the metal tip of the Washington Monument is "Praise be to God."

Remember, "Liberty is too precious a thing to be buried in books."

"Be kind, anyway." — Mother Teresa.
