Ron Bowen, head football and wrestling coach at Valley Center High School, submitted his resignation at the last school board meeting. He will become the head football coach at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka. Roger Maris, an assistant football coach under Bowen the last two years, was named to replace him. Bowen coached football at Valley Center for seven years. His record was 43-21 with Chisholm Trail League titles in 1970 and 1973. He also started the wrestling program in 1969. Bowen produced three all-state football players: Carl Searcy, King Doolen and Gerald Lawrence. He singled out those three, along with Dale Hayden, Ron Garman and Don Garman, as perhaps his best during his time at Valley Center. Bowen said Kyle Morgan, a state champion in 1973, was the best wrestler he's coached at Valley Center.

Cleanup continued from the oil leak that sprayed southeast Valley Center two weeks ago. Jim Hayes, area manager for Mobil Oil Co., said a right-of-way agent from the company visited the site immediately following the accident and has begun making reparations for the damage. The company initially tried to clean the homes with a high-powered water hose and detergent. But in several instances, that method hasn't worked, and the homes would have to be repainted. "So far Mobil's been marvelously cooperative," said Constance Davis, 517 Dover. Judy Lann, 600 Dover, said her house also would need to be repainted but she was more worried about the vegetation that became oil soaked. Hayes said the final tally of oil lost was 12 barrels or 504 gallons.

The Valley Center City Council voted 5-3 to kill a highly restrictive and controversial proposal to ban the use of cellphones in the city. The proposed ordinance would have prohibited drivers from talking on cellphones, whether with a hand-held device or a hands-free device. The ordinance would have given police the authority to pull over drivers seen talking on their cellphones. Bruce Campbell, Al Hobson, Cheryl Nordstedt, Jake Jackson and Marci Maschino voted against the ordinance. Lou Cicirello, Kate Jackson and Harry Gerling voted in favor of the ordinance.

Two Wichita men accused of stealing more than $4,500 worth of fireworks in Valley Center were arrested last week. Police said Dylan Reinecker and Kyle Livingston, both 19, were booked in the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of burglary, felony theft and criminal damage to property. Sgt. Lloyd Newman said the investigation into the men's connection to the June 29 burglary at the Wholesale Fireworks building at 69th North and Meridian started with a vehicle stop in Wichita.
