Looking Back Last Updated: July 02, 2015 50 years ago Jane Blackwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Blackwell, Newton, was awarded a four-year scholarship in debate and forensics at Oklahoma Baptist University. Miss Blackwell is an honor Thespian and a 1965 graduate of Valley Center High School. The Blackwells moved recently to Newton from Valley Center. Mr. and Mrs. C.E. McGity of Wichita announced the marriage of their daughter, Judy, to Bruce Bachelder, son of Mrs. Lula Maye Bachelder, Valley Center. 45 years ago Elizabeth Ann Jobe became the bride of Charles Thomas Spoor June 13, 1970, at the McConnell Air Force Base chapel. Chaplain Bilderback officiated. Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Jobe of rural Valley Center. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles I. Spoor of rural Auburn, Ill. Maid of honor was Cheryl Smith, and Kathy Dexter served as bridesmaid. Dennis Vanhercke served as best man with Bob Ronald as groomsman. Tom Meyers and John Mavernack seated guests. After their wedding trip to Auburn, Ill., the couple was at home in Wichita. The groom was serving with the U.S. Air Force at McConnell Air Force Base. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh R. Hetherington of rural Towanda announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Cheryl Lynn, to Michael Pohlenz. He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth Pohlenz of Fairfield, Iowa. The bride-elect and her fiancé were senior music education majors at Friends University. Both were members of the Singing Quakers. 40 years ago Director Dean Dellinger announced that the cast had been selected for the Valley Players' summer production of "Bye Bye Birdie." John Knisely and Judy Rayl headed the cast as a budding songwriter and his marriage-minded girlfriend. Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh played those roles in the 1963 movie version, singing such standards as "Put On A Happy Face" and "Got a Lot of Livin' to Do." Dale and Rita Foster of Wichita announced the birth of a son, Jerome Barton, born June 12. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Benefield and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Foster, all of Valley Center. 35 years ago The Valley Center Teachers Association, on the recommendation of its K-NEA counsel from Topeka, signed an agreement acknowledging an impasse in negotiations. This means, according to teachers' chief negotiator Janet Danitschek, that the board doesn't have to go to court to seek an impasse ruling "because both sides are agreed on that point now." Judith Ann Williams and Mark W. Peavey were married June 20 in the First Foursquare Gospel Church. The Rev. David Walker officiated. Mrs. Frances Williams, Wichita, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond T. Peavey, Valley Center, are the parents of the couple. The bride was a medical assistant at the Wichita Clinic, and the groom was an apprentice electrician. 30 years ago The U.S.D. 262 Board of Education was to have tried to resolve contract problems involving Superintendent Wayne Clark and bus supervisor Larry Rowley at its regular monthly meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hill celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house at their home east of Furley. 25 years ago Not many forces have put a harness on the fun-seeking missile that people know as Charlie Hunsinger. The short list of people and events that have been able to slow Hunsinger's search for a good time includes: his junior high school coach, Nanny Duver. Emory Lindquist, the Korean War, his wife, Carol. Think about the mischievous characters radical dudes in vogue: television's Bart Simpson, Calvin (of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes), and, of course, Dennis the Menace. If they were to grow up, marry, get a job and raise a family, they would probably turn into someone very much like the 59-year-old Hunsinger. Edward Dills and Sherri Quiring of Valley Center announced the birth of their son, Jonathan Michael Edward, June 26. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 1/2 ounces and was 19 ¾ inches long. He joined a sister, Britany Shianne, 15 months. Grandparents are Milton and Kathaleene Quiring, Valley Center; Lora Williams, Haysville; Therman Dills, Guthrie, Okla.; and Shirley Dills, Enid, Okla. Great-grandparents are Ken and Donna Pearson, Valley Center; Lucille Lytle, Wichita, and Lloyd and Betty Miller, Enid. 20 years ago Hornet fans can buy reserved seats for Valley Center High School games next year, at least for football. The school board voted 4-3 to approve the Booster Club's request for reserved seating at football and basketball games. The reserved seats will take up about 10 percent of the total seating available at games. Tracy Rochelle Beckley of Valley Center and Michael Joseph Warner of Eagle Press, Texas, announced their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of Keith and Nancy Harimon of Valley Center and Marc and Jenny Beckley of Wichita. She is a 1990 graduate of Valley Center High School and was a manager at Busch's Luggage and Leather, Wichita. The prospective groom is the son of Harold Jr. and Cheryl Warner of Wichita. He is a 1989 graduate of Valley Center High School and a 1994 graduate of Washburn University. He was a United States Border Patrol agent. 15 years ago The Metropolitan Area Planning commission approved a conditional use permit for a sand excavation pit planned near 53rd North and Ridge Road. The pit will be operated by Central Sand Co. on about 60 acres east of Ridge and north of 53rd North. Central Sand plans to purchase the land, which is owned by Tom and George Holmes. Joshua Cundiff and Amy Runyan, both of Valley Center, announced their engagement. The bride-elect is the daughter of Jim and Carla Runyan of Valley Center. A 1996 graduate of Valley Center High School, she was employed by Drs. Fiedgel & Keusler, Optometrists. The prospective groom is the son of Dave and Jan Cundiff of Valley Center. Also a 1996 graduate of Valley Center High School, he was employed at City Blue Print. 10 years ago The Valley Center City Council recently approved two proposals designed to benefit future development and growth. The first proposal was for renovations to the Sheridan (West) and Fifth streets wastewater lift station. The second was a drainage construction project on Seneca Street near the Fiddlers Creek housing development. Jim and Julie Oliver of Park City announced the birth of their son, James Castile, on June 24, 2005. He weighed 9 pounds, 10.4 ounces and was more than 20 inches long. He joined a sister, Reece, 21 months. Grandparents are John and Margaret Kropf of Rogers, Ark., Joye Oliver of South Carolina and Jim and Louise Oliver of Denver. Great-grandmother is Lola Edson of Rogers. 5 years ago Jaylee Adams loves shoes. Sandals. Tennis shoes. High heels, even. And the sparklier, the better. So when the 5-year-old Valley Center girl heard about kids in Haiti who go barefoot or cover their feet with cardboard and pop bottles, she could hardly believe it. "That's sad," she said. It shouldn't be like that, she decided. Jaylee's desire to give kids something that she enjoys so much blossomed into a summer project that overwhelmed even her. Quinley Ann Koch and Kiley Marie Oliphant, both of Valley Center, were awarded degrees from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., at the end of the 2010 spring session. Koch, a 1998 graduate of Valley Center High School, earned a doctorate of veterinary medicine degree. Oliphant, a 2006 graduate of Valley Center High School, received a bachelor of science in hotel and restaurant administration. |
