No programs July 1 because of holiday
By Janice Sharp, director
Last Updated: June 25, 2015

Many thanks to the Police Department, Fire Department and the EMS for allowing their staff to bring vehicles and participate in our Family Night at the library. The families attending enjoyed looking at the vehicles and visiting with the members of each department. We appreciate the support of the families that attended.

We will not have any programs July 1 due to the Independence Day holiday. We will have story time at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and the hero movie "Sky High" (PG) at 2 p.m. Thursday, both at the library. The library will host a carnival July 8 as part of our summer reading program. There will be sessions at 9 and 11 a.m. at the library. After the carnival, it's hard to believe we have only two remaining programs before the final party at the pool July 29. Summer is definitely going quickly.

The library will host a free indie publishing workshop by local author Sheila Schilling-Kreutner from 1 to 2 p.m. June 27. Sheila will discuss self-publishing and its challenges and rewards. She is the author of the adult fantasy novel, "Book of Breathings." The workshop is open to teens and adults. Copies will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served.

Our high school book discussion will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 25 to discuss "Cinder: Book One of the Lunar Chronicles" by Marissa Meyer. The high school discussions are held the fourth Thursday of each month.

The theme for the teens — "Unmask!" — continues with Flash Back Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 26. The teens will play old games. We have restructured our age requirement and now include students going into fifth grade. There will be games and snacks for everyone. If teens wish to participate in the summer reading challenge, we are requesting they read a minimum of 25 hours during the program. Teens are not required to participate in the reading challenge to attend parties.

The library will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

The next adult program will be a henna tattoo presentation at 6:30 p.m. July 2. At the teen henna program last summer, we had requests from adults for a program only for them. This program will be for adults 18 and over. Refreshments will be served.

We encourage children to read during the summer but they are not required to attend either the story times or the weekly programs to participate in the reading portion of the program. Nor are they required to participate in the reading portion to attend any programs.

The library is committed to offering a variety of free programming for all ages. Each Tuesday during June and July, we have story time at 10:30 a.m. for children up to 8 years of age at the library. We have a variety of programs at 9 and 11 a.m. Wednesdays held at Le Venue, hero movies at 2 p.m. Thursdays and gaming Fridays, both at the library.

We do require registration forms for each child attending the Wednesday programs. The forms provide an approximate number of children attending to enable us to have adequate supplies and snacks. Children 8 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a responsible individual at least 12 years of age. Please do not bring food items or drinks to the programs.

Children up to second grade this fall are asked to read a minimum of 25 books. Children in third grade and above are asked to read a minimum of 25 hours. The deadline for the reading program is July 25, giving all participants plenty of time to complete their reading requirements. Our guideline sheet outlines the full details for the required reading and activities for the summer. On the reverse side we have provided a complete list of activities for all ages: toddlers for story times, children for the reading programs, teens for their parties and adults for their events.

The library has two reading challenges underway for adults. One challenge started at the beginning of the year with 52 categories in which patrons were asked to find and read a book in each of the categories. We requested that patrons read in 26 of the categories. The second challenge coincides with our summer programming — "Escape the Ordinary" — and requests patrons find books about heroes.

We have 10 categories, such as a lady hero, a real life hero, a comic book hero or a sports hero. We are requesting that patrons read about heroes in seven of the 10 categories. The summer challenge will end with the return of the appropriate reading logs by 6 p.m. Aug. 19. Information about both challenges is available on our website and at the library.
