Cops break up underage drinking By Chris Strunk Last Updated: June 04, 2015 The summer underage party season has begun in Valley Center. Police busted a large drinking party on the city's west side early May 29, arresting a 19-year-old and calling the parents of nearly 35 juveniles. Alcohol was recovered, but no drugs were found, Chief Mark Hephner said. The bust involved officers from Colwich, Bel Aire, Park City, Maize and Sedgwick County. "The only way to do it is to get a whole bunch of bodies there," Hephner said. "… We also think it's effective if you call the parents out." Officers responded to a residence at 596 W. First just before midnight May 28 after a neighbor called 911 to report a loud party with possible underage drinking. When an officer arrived, he could see juveniles and alcohol inside the residence, but no one would answer the door. The neighbor called the homeowner, who was out of town, and got permission to give officers the homeowner's contact information. Sgt. Thomas Delgado called the homeowner and received permission to go inside the residence. Once inside, officers found as many as 35 people between the ages of 16 and 19 years. Underage drinking charges are pending against at least seven juveniles. It took officers several hours to complete the investigation and contact the juveniles' parents. |
