Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones, Valley Center, announced the birth of a 6-pound, 2-ounce daughter at St. Francis Hospital. They have three other children, Paul Larry 10, Cindy 4, and Donna 3. Mr. Jones was employed by Schwind Carpet Service.

Gary Stephens, son of Robert Stephens and Mary Culver, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.A. Culver, Yates Center, were united in marriage with a double-ring ceremony in the Delrose Methodist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brink of Wichita, announced the engagement of their daughter, Vickie Elaine to John Lindsey Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Rogers of Valley Center. Vickie is a 1970 graduate of Valley Center High School. John is a 1967 graduate of Valley Center High School and attended Butler County Community Junior College.

Miss Sheri Lynn Robinson became the bride of Kenneth McMillen May 29 in the First Baptist Church, Valley Center. The Rev. Ralph Hunt officiated. The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clyde L. Robinson of Valley Center. Parents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth L. McMillen of Wichita. Mrs. David Dahl was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Janet Robinson, Miss Jennie Fischer and Mrs. Alan Pierce. Roger McMillen was best man and groomsmen were David Dahl, Danny McMillen and Chuck Wasser. Seating guests were Howard Botts and Greg Tracy. Terry Jane Robinson and Darin Dahl were taper lighters. The flower girl was Lori Ashley. Timothy Dahl was the ring bearer, Mrs. Henry Hayden was organist and Annette Brownlee was vocalist.

Valley Center's City Council approved a one-category pay raise for all salaried city employees and agreed to seek bids from private trash haulers for the city's new trash system, which must be implemented Jan. 1. "They're certainly not overpaid, that's for sure," said councilman Jess Fagan before the unanimous vote for the raises.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Kallenbach of McPherson announced the birth of their daughter, Sarah Susanne. She was born May 27 and weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces. Their son, Chris, visited Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Kallenbach, Valley Center, who are the paternal grandparents.

The Valley Center City Council upheld a decision of the city planning commission, denying a zone change request by Phyillis Stoops, owner of the House of Wicker and Gifts, 401 N. Ash. The decisions of the commission and council mean that Stoops will have to close her business eventually.

Ron and Sonia Farthing attended his 30-year class reunion in Stanberry, Mo. Thirty-five of the 41 in the class attended.

Lee Newcomer had a business that was multiplying like rabbits. Or you could even say her business is "hare today, gone tomorrow." That's because Newcomer's business is rabbits. She raises more than 2,000 New Zealand Whites, a pink-eyed, white furred species that was sold for its tender meat and spotless pelt.

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Miller of McPherson announced the birth of a daughter, Audrie Rachelle, on May 29. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20-inches long. She has a 20-month-old sister, Tiffany. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clavin Bahr of Valley Center and Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Miller of Newton. Great-grandparents are Emma Fichtner of Wellfleet, Neb., Emma Bahr of Red Bud, Ill., and Anna Miller of Otis.

Only one thought was going to through Jeff Hersh's mind when he saw the gun drawn on him by the passenger in the vehicle. "I was thinking, ‘I can't die. I'm getting married in December," said Hersh. Hersh, the state trooper who shot May 24 by one of two occupants of a car he had just pulled over for speeding on I-135 near the 101st North exit, was released from HCA Wesley Medical Center.

Sgt. Michael R. Crow was decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal at McConnell Air Force Base. The medal was awarded on the basis of outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of duties on behalf of the Air Force. A production control specialist with the 384th Civil Engineering Squadron, his wife, Stephanie, is the daughter of Ernest and Sharon Stephens.

Valley Center's Mike Drumright, the 11th player chosen in the Major League Baseball draft, said negotiations with the Detroit Tigers hadn't started. However, the Wichita State pitcher said he was eager to sign a contract. If the sides can't reach an agreement, Drumright could return to WSU for his senior season, but that would leave his bargaining power "depleted," he said.

Greg and Michelle Otte of Monroe, Wash., announced the birth of their son, Jacob Andrew. He weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 1/2-inches long. He joined a brother, Joshua, 15 months. Grandparents are Eric and Nancy Otte of Valley Center, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Gregory of Goldbar, Wash., and Jerry Osterman of Chalan, Wash.

Elizabeth Underwood wanted to be a model since she was 14. She finally got her chance when she was named one of eight finalists in Seventeen magazine's Chanel Model of the Year Contest. The 19-year-old Valley Center girl flew to New York for a whirlwind three-day adventure and will find out next month whether she will appear on the cover of the magazine's September issue.

Amy Neaderhiser and Darren Edwards, both of Wichita, announced their engagement. The bride-elect is the daughter of Phyllis and Ben Neaderhiser of Topeka. She was a student at Wichita State University. The prospective groom is the son of Linda and Arthur "Bud" Edwards of Kansas City, Mo. He was an electrician at Shelley Electric. The couple planned an Aug. 13 wedding.

Valley Center had the potential to attract new businesses to the city, and 77th North could be the gateway for that development, according to the planning commission's agenda. Al Hobson, chairman of the Valley Center Planning and Zoning Commission, spoke to the city council to elaborate on the commission's development plans. Hobson said the city has a limited area where businesses could develop. He proposed that a sewer system be added to extend south along Meridian on the west side of the street, which he said would accommodate more development.

Jack and Sally Norris of Wichita were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary June 27. Jack Norris and Sally Zucker were married June 27, 1945, in New York. He was a baker aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was the retired owner of J&S Plumbing. She was a homemaker. The couple has four daughters, Sharon Norris of Valley Center, Jackie Conrad of Minneapolis, Minn., Sandra Johnson of Lawrence, and Marcia Day of Lake Ozark, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

It would be another two months before residents could learn the direction of trash and recycling service in Valley Center. But some folks aren't waiting to weigh in on the matter. "Make sure price is not outrageous," one resident said. "I live on a set income and do not want to pay more than I am now," another said.

Janet Koelsch and Caleb Barnes announced their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride-elect is the daughter of Bill and Rita Koelsch. She graduated from Paola High School and lived in Wichita. The prospective bridegroom is the son of Steve and Shannon Barnes, and Gordon and Bea Coats. He graduated from Valley Center High School and lived in Wichita.  The couple planned to marry July 17, 2010, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
