Valley Center High School graduate Carson Lee will play basketball on the next level.

Lee, who had a breakout senior season as a long-range shooting specialist, signed a letter of intent April 22 to join the Southwestern College basketball program in Winfield this fall.

Southwestern head coach Matt O'Brien was at the signing.

"We're excited about having Carson on campus," O'Brien said. "We really value student-athletes. We know we're getting a good basketball player, a really good person and a really good student."

O'Brian said he was impressed by Lee's ability on the court.

"He did the little things really well," O'Brien said. "He's a good passer and could knock down shots. The main thing is, I think he'll be a really good teammate."

Lee averaged 5.1 points per game as a senior. He hit 78 percent of his free throws and 31.7 percent overall from the field. He was third on the team with 18 3-pointers (30 percent) and shot 34.1 percent from 2-point range.

Lee said he worked hard to get a chance to play college basketball and knows he'll have a lot of work ahead of him.

"I spent a lot of time in the gym, working on my skills," he said. "My teammates helped a lot, giving me the confidence to keep on going. It paid off."

Lee said he was impressed by the Southwestern campus and its educational offerings. He plans to study engineering and computer science.

"It's a small school, and you'll get a lot of one-on-one attention in the classroom," he said. "That was big for me too."
