Hornet softball team beats Campus and Cheney

The Valley Center High School softball team improved to 12-5 with two wins in its final home games of the regular season May 12.

The Hornets beat Cheney 9-2 and Campus 7-1.

Valley Center relied on consistent pitching and timely hitting to get the triangular sweep.

Against Cheney, Valley Center turned a pitchers' duel into an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Cheney took advantage of a walk in the third inning for a 1-0 lead, breaking a two-inning stalemate. Valley Center answered with a two-out rally.

Hannah Headley singled to third to start the rally. LaTaylah Perez singled to short to move Headley to third. Taylor Rowley got the RBI with a single to center.

Kaylee Burnett doubled to center to score Perez and Rowley. Elena Turner kept the inning alive with an RBI double to left.

Ashley Thorne scored Turner with a single.

Valley Center tacked on three runs in the fourth on hits by Kaitlan Stanhope and Wylie Glover and a breakout of errors by Cheney.

Cheney scored an unearned run in the fifth, but Valley Center closed the door to get to the seventh, when Ashlyn Jacobs Glover forced Cheney to strand two runners.

Wylie Glover pitched three innings and struck out three. Jacobs gave up one hit and no runs over four innings. She struck out four.

Perez and Thorne had two hits each. Turner, Burnett and Hayden Francis hit doubles.

Valley Center took control early against Campus, scoring four in the second inning and keeping the foot down for the victory.

After Turner reached on an error and Thorne on a single to center, Francis hit a home run over the center-field fence to clear the bases.

It didn't stop. Headley scored on a sacrifice by Perez after Glover moved Headley to third on a single.

Valley Center added a run in the third on another big hit by Francis, who doubled to left to score Brittany Granger. Headley and Stanhope got RBIs in the fifth for a 7-1 advantage.

Burnett struck out two in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the victory.

Thorne and Francis had two hits each for the Hornets.

Granger pitched two innings for Valley Center. She gave up one hit and one run.

Burnett struck out six.

Valley Center was scheduled to finish its rained-out game with Goddard May 13 and then make up its double-header at Andover May 18 to finish the regular season.

Junior varsity — The Valley Center junior varsity squad split games with Goddard May 5. The Hornets lost the first game 4-3 and won the second 9-0.

Coach Dave Friess said the Hornets played a good game in the opener but one play cost them the five-inning game. Goddard scored the winning run on a fielding error with two outs. Alora Klinkhammer had two hits for the Hornets, who out-hit Goddard 5-4.

In the second game, Valley Center combined hits and aggressive base running with Goddard errors to blow up the contest in the third inning, scoring all nine of the game's runs. Reagan Fischer and Klinkammer each had two hits. Fischer and Lily Bolte hit doubles. Klinkhammer picked up the one-hit shutout win, striking out five while walking just one.
