Summer reading plans underway

The free presentation of "The Things They Carried Home" will at 2 p.m. May 3 at the library. The Friends of the Library has been awarded a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council for the presentation. The Valley Center Historical Society and the Little Arkansas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are co-sponsors of the event. The program will provide information on the preservation of memorabilia brought home by members of the military. Jami Tracy, curator of the Sedgwick County Historical Museum, will facilitate the program. Individuals attending are encouraged to bring items for display that "they carried home."

We will also have a book signing during that time by Mike Gower for his book, "Glad You're Back," in which he shares his experiences after his return from military service. He will have books for sale as well. Mike started kindergarten at Abilene Elementary and continued through third grade before his family moved to Cheney. There will be door prizes, and refreshments will be served.

Watch for the water bills around the first of May. The library has prepared an insert that will give our summer schedule, as well as an annual report detailing our statistics for 2014. We hope you find the information useful.

We're nearing the end of our weekly story times for the school term. The final story times will be May 5, 6 and 7. On those days, we will have picnics outside in the reading area, weather permitting. Parents are asked to bring a lunch of their choice; the library will provide a drink and ice cream. In case of inclement weather, the picnics will be held inside.

The library book sale will be May 6, 7, 8 and 9 during normal hours at the library. Staff will set up the sale May 6. Hardback books will be priced at $1 each; paperback books will be priced at 50 cents each. Books that are left after the sale will be distributed to several different places. Most of the paperback books will go to the Sedgwick County Jail. Most of the hardback books will go to the Open Door Ministries of the First United Methodist Church. If you know of an organization that could use the books, please let us know so we can follow up and hopefully deliver some boxes to them.

Summer reading plans are well underway for "Every Hero Has a Story," our children's theme for 2015. I'll be making visits to several classes at Abilene Elementary this week and class visits at West Elementary next week. Since the elementary school libraries close down to conduct their inventories before school is out, students will be able to record their reading beginning May 11 toward our suggested reading goals for the program.

The registration forms and guidelines will be available May 11 at the library and on our website. The students will have registration forms to bring home after my school visits. Children up to second grade in the fall are required to read 25 books. Children in third grade and above in the fall are required to read 25 hours. The full explanation and reading expectations are outlined in the sheet of guidelines available. The weekly sessions will begin June 3, with a presentation of search and rescue dogs with their trainer. Weekly programs will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. at Le Venue, 109 W. Main. We are collecting clean adult T-shirts to use for a craft June 10. Color is not a factor and shirts do not need to be new; we'll be cutting them.

Everyone in our Valley Center community is being inconvenienced by the road construction. Please consider the merchants along Meridian and shop locally before thinking of traveling to Wichita or Newton. Access is there for us to use, though it may not be as easy.

Remember to turn in your local receipts to the Chamber to be entered in a monthly drawing for $50 cash. The individual who turns in the most receipts during April, May and June will be awarded a $150 cash prize.

The library is continuing to collect Best Choice labels. When we have reached 1,000 labels, we can send them in for a payment to our Friends of the Library. In addition, if you order merchandise from Amazon, please sign in through Amazon.Smile.com. A small percentage of purchases are directed to the Amazon Foundation that distributes funds each quarter to nonprofit organizations. When choosing the nonprofit organization upon login, please choose Friends of the Valley Center Library in Valley Center, Kan. There is another Friends of the Valley Center Library in Valley Center, Calif.
