The View from Sunflower Gardens

May brings celebrations and birds

As we get close to May days, we have graduation days. Some of us have grandchildren who this year are wearing a cap and gown after high school or college. Congratulations to all grads. Also it's time for Mother's Day on May 10 to honor all mothers.

Verse of the week: "My brethren, always abounding in the word of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain." (I Corinthians 15:58)

We pray for all our troops, wherever they are, and their families.

Collegians — after years of study, books, learning, fun and friendship — attain a degree.

"We love the Halls of Ivy that we sing of here today. Every voice will bid farewell. Like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall and the footsteps of us all — will echo down the hall and disappear.

"But as we sadly start our journey far apart, a part of every heart will linger here.

"In the sacred halls of Ivy where we lived and learned to know — that through the years we'll see you in the sweet afterglow." Henry Russell.

We all like our Monday coffee chats, potluck dinners, Tuesday Bible study, Wednesday game nights, exercise days and walks around our north building. We play cards, dominoes, marbles and do jigsaw puzzles; also enjoy a good library here.

Welcome, welcome, to new residents.

Happy birthday to those born in May.

In the meantime, our bird feeders are busy. The local birds need food, water and shelter.

In our area, we have mourning doves, finches, sparrows, blackbirds, woodpeckers and blue jays.

The Wichita Great Plains Nature Center sent speakers on a recent Saturday to tell us about Kansas birds.

In our area, some farmers raise sunflowers for bird seeds.

Did you know the Westar "Green Team" helps in the habitat of Kansas wildlife? Through native grass and tree planting, volunteers help our Kansas scene to be alive with birds, rabbits, squirrels and other lively wildlife.

May shows our trees in full green leaf and new flowers. It's warmer temps now, and storms bring us needed rains for local wheat crops.

With birthdays, graduations and spring cleaning, we are all busy here.

We like our music nights here of piano concerts and hymn sing-alongs.

We take time to shop for necessities. A variety of cars are in our parking lot.

"Our country is no better than its citizens, and no stronger than those in whom we put our trust and votes." The Rev. Peter Marshall.

May God bless the U.S.A. Be a good Amer-I-can.

"Be kind, anyway." Mother Teresa.
