Valley Center senior signs to play football at Pittsburg State By Chris Strunk Last Updated: April 30, 2015 Valley Center High School senior Dylan Scheer, the starting quarterback for the Hornets for the past two seasons, has signed a letter of intent to play football for Pittsburg State University this fall. Scheer had a ceremony April 15 in the high school library. He thanked his coaches and his teammates. "I've had two great coaches who gave me plenty of opportunity to see the field," Scheer said. "I thank coach (Caleb) Smith and (former coach Pat) Haxton for giving me a chance and putting me where the team needed me the most. They and my teammates have taught me so much that I'll be able to carry on to the next level." Scheer, whose first love was defense, played both ways as a junior and then was switched to solely the quarterback role before his senior season. Last year, Scheer led the Hornets to a 3-6 record. He passed for 927 yards and eight touchdowns. He ran for 438 and another eight touchdowns on the ground, making him the team's leading scorer. "This school and the program mean the world to me," Scheer said. "… I can't believe it's over. My teammates and I did our best to get the program on track. … I'm going to miss everybody. They've all pushed me and gave me that drive to be better." Scheer likely will play defense for Pittsburg State, a school he's had his eyes on for several years. "I've always loved Pitt State," Scheer said. "I have two sisters who graduated from there. I've been around the campus quite a bit. I told myself when I was younger that I wanted to play there some day. I'm glad I'm getting the opportunity to do so." Smith said he appreciated Scheer's work ethic and leadership. "Dylan was one of the best leaders I've been around in seven years of coaching," Smith said. "He always had a big-picture view of everything. He understood what coaches were looking for. He was like a coach on the field." Smith said he's confident that Scheer will demonstrate those same qualities at the next level. "I think it's a really good fit for him," Smith said. "He's going to be a product of that program. Four or five years in that program and by the end, I guarantee, that he's going to be earning some time. He's a guy that's willing to put that time in, too. I wouldn't be surprised to see him do some really good things there." Scheer said he likely will study pre-medicine. |
