From the library

Story time for school year ends soon

We're almost at the end of April — the month certainly has gone quickly. Summer Reading is just around the corner. I'll be visiting with several of the classes at Abilene Elementary next week; the visits at West will be in May. We have all the performers and events scheduled so now we're narrowing down details. The theme for this year is Every Hero has a Story.

One of the planned crafts is to make a cape for the children attending. If you have adult T-shirts that are worn and ready to be tossed, please consider donating them for our project. Adult shirts will work the best; color is not important.

The high school teens will have their next book discussion at 6:30 p.m. April 23. The book for the discussion is "Dearly, Departed: A Zombie Novel" by Lia Habel. Books are still available.

Watch for the water bills around the first of May. The library has prepared an insert that will give our summer schedule, as well as an annual report detailing our statistics for 2014. We hope you find the information useful.

The Friends of the Library has been awarded a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council for the presentation of "The Things They Carried Home." The Valley Center Historical Society and the Little Arkansas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are co-sponsors of the event. The program will provide information on the preservation of memorabilia brought home by members of the military. Jami Tracy, curator of the Sedgwick County Historical Museum, will facilitate the program. Individuals attending are encouraged to bring items for display that "they carried home." The free presentation will be held at the library at 2 p.m. May 3.

We will also have a book signing by Mike Gower for his book "Glad You're Back" in which he shares his experiences after his return from military service. He will have books for sale as well. Gower started kindergarten at Abilene Elementary and continued through third grade before his family moved to Cheney. There will be door prizes, and refreshments will be served.

We're nearing the end of our weekly story times for the school term. The final story times will be May 5, 6 and 7. On those days, we will have picnics outside in the reading area, weather permitting. Parents are asked to bring a lunch of their choice; the library will provide a drink and ice cream. In case of inclement weather, the picnics will be held inside.

We're continuing the weeding process of the collection. Our shelves are full, so we're checking each item to determine the last circulation. If a title has not been read for three years, it's a candidate for the book sale. We make every effort to keep titles in a series but if only one of the series has been read, we'll withdraw the whole series. In the nonfiction area, the weeding is more complicated. If the book is no longer relevant or out or date, that book will be withdrawn. There are so many good titles, it's difficult to pull materials.

Books that are left after the sale will be distributed to several different places. Most of the paperback books will go to the jail; most of the hardback books will go to the Open Door Ministries of the First United Methodist Church. Books are thrown away if they are damaged or dirty. The library book sale will be May 6 through 9. The sale will be held at the library during normal hours. Staff will set up the sale on May 6.

We have received some much needed rain recently and with the rain, we had some storms in the area. Please be aware that the library does NOT have a storm shelter. If storms are near, we make every effort to encourage patrons to travel home prior to the storms. If staff is here, the only areas without windows are the restrooms. Residents should check with City Hall for verification of buildings in Valley Center designated as shelters.

Just a reminder: If you order merchandise from Amazon, please sign in through Amazon.Smile.com. A small percentage of purchases are directed to the Amazon Foundation, which distributes funds each quarter to nonprofit organizations. When choosing the nonprofit organization upon login, please choose "Friends of the Valley Center Library: in Valley Center, KS. There is another "Friends of the Valley Center Library" in Valley Center, Calif.
