Valley Center Middle School tennis splits a pair of duals

Valley Center Middle School won its first dual meet of the year April 13 against Haysville Middle School. The Hornets won 15 of 22 total matches, including 11 of 15 singles matches and split eight doubles matches.

Both of Valley's top two seeds were victorious as singles players and teamed together in doubles. No. 1 singles Colby Swift won 6-2 and No. 2 Brandon McClure won 6-1. As Valley's No. 1 doubles team, Swift and McClure won 6-3.

Other singles victories went to Hayden Brauer (No. 6) 6-2, Jeremiah Strunk (No. 7) 6-5 (tiebreaker 10-8), Matt Patterson (No. 8) 6-4, Ethan Phillips (No. 9) 6-0, Brayden Ruble (No. 10) 6-4, Josiah Farney (No. 11) 6-0, Joshua Dessenberger (No. 12) 6-1, Jace Cress (No. 13) 6-0 and Elijah Thompson (No. 15) 6-0.

Among this group, Ruble and Farney won 6-4 at No. 4 doubles, and Dessenberger and Phillips won at No. 5 doubles 6-1. The No. 3 team of Kyle Stamm and Hayden Brauer was victorious 6-2.

Singles players who lost to Haysville included No. 3 Gavin Fitch, No. 4 Kyle Stamm, No. 5 Logan Snyder and No. 14 Sam Benz.

Other doubles teams that participated included No. 2 Fitch and Snyder, who lost a tiebreaker; No. 6 Crass and Benz; No. 7 Robertson and Gamble, who also lost a tiebreaker; and No. 8 Barnett and Ashcraft.

The Hornets lost a dual April 7 against Prairie Hills. They won 13 of 29 total matches, including nine of 20 singles and four of nine doubles.

Swift, McClure, Dessenberger, Cale Cheney and Thornton each won their singles match and being part of doubles teams that also won.

Swift at No. 1 singles and McClure at No. 2 each won by identical 6-1 scores. The duo also teamed up to win 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Strunk won a tiebreaker 6-5 (9-7) at No. 7 singles, and Wyatt Jones eased to a 6-4 win at No. 8 singles.

Dessenberger won 6-3 at No. 13 singles, and Crass picked up a 6-2 win at No. 14.

Other singles winners were Cheney (No. 16) by a 6-1 score, while Thornton (No. 18) and Jarod Robertson (No. 20) each won 6-0.

In addition to Swift and McClure at No. 1 doubles, Valley's No. 6 doubles team of Brayden Ruble and Josiah Farney avenged losses in singles with a 6-4 win. Dessenberger and Thornton won 6-3 at No. 8, and Cheney and Jacob Worman won 6-0 at No. 9.

Valley's other singles competitors included Worman, Gavin Fitch, Kyle Stamm, Logan Snyder, Hayden Brauer, Matt Peterson, Nathan Schaar, Sam Benz and Harrison Ducommun. Other doubles teams were Fitch and Snyder, Stamm and Brauer, Jones and Schaar, Patterson and Strunk, and Crass and Benz.
