Read during National Library Week

March Book Madness ended last week. Book winners were the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich in the adult category and "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak in the young adult category. The adult winner was Kay Thrasher, and the young adult winner was Samantha Phinney. They each received a T-shirt.

This is National Library Week. Take some extra time to read this week. When we have new shipments of books delivered, library staff feels like it should be Christmas. We love reviewing the new books.

The next Combined Community Project committee meeting is 7 p.m. April 16, at City Hall. The architects will be presenting their final plan and budget. This meeting is open to the public; come to be informed.

Citywide spring cleanup is April 18. Check with the city to find out what items will be accepted.

The high school teens will have their next book discussion at 6:30 p.m. April 23. The book for the discussion is "Dearly, Departed: A Zombie Novel" by Lia Habel. Books are still available.

The Friends of the Library have been awarded a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council for the presentation of "The Things They Carried Home." The Valley Center Historical Society and the Little Arkansas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are co-sponsors of the event. The program will provide information about the preservation of memorabilia brought home by members of the military. Jami Tracy, curator of the Sedgwick County Historical Museum, will facilitate the program. Individuals attending are encouraged to bring items for display that "they carried home." The free presentation will 2 p.m. May 3 at the library.

We will also have a book signing by Mike Gower for his book "Glad You're Back" in which he shares his experiences after his return from military service. He will have books for sale as well. There will be door prizes; refreshments will be served.

The library, along with many other organizations, depends upon volunteers to assist in keeping operations running smoothly. We have several loyal volunteers that certainly make our lives easier. Our volunteers shelve books, alphabetize the DVD sleeves, and prepare crafts and supplies for events and whatever assistance is needed. Most recently, we had volunteers for our Easter Egg Hunt activities — the bunny and those who assisted with crafts and outside games.

For myself, I have considered my commitment of volunteer time to be as a job. I began volunteering at West Elementary about 25 years ago when my oldest child was in Arlene Gordon's classroom. I have helped her each Tuesday and Thursday morning for an hour and a half to two hours each time — grading papers, recording grades, filing and other tasks she needed completed.

Arlene is retiring at the end of the school year, and I'll retire from the school along with her. Her retirement reception will be from 1 to 3 p.m. April 26, in the library at West. Put the date on your calendar so you can attend and let her know how much you have appreciated her dedication through her years of teaching.

We're nearing the end of our weekly Story Times for the school term. The final Story times will be May 5, 6 and 7. On those days, we will have picnics outside in the reading area, weather permitting. Parents are asked to bring a lunch of their choice; the library will provide a drink and ice cream. In case of inclement weather, the picnics will be held inside.

The library book sale will be May 7, 8 and 9. The sale will be held at the library during normal business  hours.
