District’s first Superstars from the middle school

A custodian and a social studies teacher were named the first Valley Center Superstars.

In a new recognition system for the Valley Center school district, teacher Carlos Marquez and custodian Brentt Busch received the awards April 13. Both work at the middle school.

Staff members were nominated by peers, and the licensed winner was selected by the District Leadership Team while the classified winner was chosen by the Classified Committee.

Marquez has been with the district for seven years.

He was described as an enthusiastic teacher who cares about his students, consistently tries new activities and incorporates engaging technology into his lessons.

According to the nomination, Marquez challenges his students to be prepared, responsible and respectful.

Busch has worked for the district for two years.

"I absolutely love having Mr. Busch as a part of our team at Valley Center Middle School," the nomination letter read.

Busch was described as always friendly, taking pride in his work.

"It was a clean sweep for the middle school," Principal Kent Hipp said.

The Superstars program honors licensed and classified employees for outstanding service to the students, staff and patrons of the district.

Nominees from the classified staff were: Busch; John Dobson, Technology Department; Debbie Edwards, VCMS administrative assistant; Ben Martin, Wheatland custodian; Debbie Lewis, West Elementary aide; Kim Williams, VCMS co-op para; Josh Huffman, director of technology; Gary Kerr, director of transportation; and Katie Mealiff, West Elementary co-op para.

Nominees from the licensed staff were: Marquez; Eugene Allyn, VCHS teacher; Kiley Jackson, West Elementary teacher; Terre Graham, West Elementary teacher; Terry Peterson, West Elementary teacher; Arlene Gordon, West Elementary teacher; Jami Burbach, Wheatland Elementary teacher; Julie Siriginano, VCHS media specialist; Steen Danielsen, VCMS teacher; Kimberly Fonseca, VCIS teacher; Greg Lehr, VCIS principal; Megan Upton-Tyner, VCHS teacher; Cori Eck, Abilene Elementary teacher; Sally Nold, VCHS assistant principal; Peggy Souder, ESOL director; Todd Larkey, VCMS art teacher; Tiffany Mathews, Abilene Elementary teacher; Jessica Ramsey, West Elementary teacher; and Lee Owens, VCHS teacher.
