Four win track titles at Pre-state Challenge

Several Hornets competed at the Wichita State University Pre-state Challenge April 10 and 11, and four of them brought home titles in five events.

Kalee Owens won the 800-meter run in the Class 4A-6A division.

Taylor Latimer was a double winner, taking first in the shot put with 36 feet, 3 inches and first in the javelin with 128-8. Both were in the 4A-6A division.

Madison Runnion won the high jump in the elite division with a leap of 5-3.75.

Other top-five finishes in the 4A-6A division for the girls were Sydney Ernst (fourth in the 100-meter dash), Kennedy Weaver (fifth in the 200), Karli Elsner (fifth in the 1,600), Madison Breault (second in the 3,200), the 4x100-meter relay team of Camille Claussen, Sammy Boese, Ernst and Weaver (fifth), and the 4x400-meter relay team of Ernst, Elsner, Jadyn Eddy and Owens (fifth).

Valley Center was third in the 4x800-meter relay in the elite division. Also in elite division, Ernst placed fifth in the 400.

Senior Mason Orr won Valley Center's lone title on the boys' side.

Orr placed first in the 4A-6A division of the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 4 inches. Orr also placed sixth in the shot put.

Valley Center had a couple of top-six finishes in the elite division. Chandler Summers was fourth in the 400-meter run, and Colby Martin was fourth in the triple jump. Both are seniors.

In the 4A-6A division, DeMarco King was third in the 100; Chase Crawford fourth in the 110 hurdles; JT Kuertz, Zach Quandt, Daniel Lentz and Summers sixth in the 4x800-meter relay; Jace Boone sixth in the pole vault; and Dylan Scheer sixth in the discus and in the javelin.

Valley Center will host a meet April 17 and will compete at Campus April 24 and at McPherson April 30.
