Westar deserves thanks for hard work
Last Updated: April 09, 2015

You don't know what you've got until it's gone.

Thousands of area residents and businesses re-discovered that truth last week when severe high winds knocked over power poles and severed electrical service.

Westar said about 70,000 customers were affected.

The April 3 storm left poles, trees and other debris scattered on roads and in farm fields throughout Sedgwick and Harvey counties. Hard hit were areas around K-96 and Woodlawn and 53rd North and Meridian.

Some residences in north Sedgwick County were without electricity for up to four days.

That's difficult to cope with.

Despite the difficulties, we were impressed by Westar's mobilization efforts, especially during a holiday weekend.

Westar linemen were joined by crews from other states throughout the weekend to restore power.

Easter is a time to be together with family, and hundreds of men and women were unable to do so this year.

We thank them for their service.

One of these days, someone will figure out how to efficiently and economically transmit electricity in a way that isn't affected by the weather. Until then, there will be men and women sacrificing holidays to keep the lights on for us.
