Out of the office By Chris Strunk Last Updated: April 09, 2015 No fooling: A real family foodfight Valley Center High School vocal music teacher and golf coach Mike McCormick got a proper April Fools' Day surprise last week. Apparently, students rearranged McCormick's office and choir room. They placed his office furniture, including his Lazyboy, in the choir room, and put the choir room podium, stool and a few chairs inside his adjacent office. A "worthy April Fools prank," Mike called it. It would've been cool to switch Mike's Dallas Cowboys banners with Pittsburgh Steelers ones. Of course, I'm not sure Mike would have thought that was "worthy." Maybe local elections need to be changed. Turnout in this week's city and school board elections was, as expected, weak. When I voted early on April 3, I went in the afternoon. One of the poll workers told me I was only the fourth person to vote that day. Spring elections will likely be a thing of the past as Kansas lawmakers put together a bill to combine them with larger ones in the fall. I've been against the effort, but I guess I can't stand in the way. The move will naturally result in larger voting numbers because more people turn out for state and national races but I don't see how it will increase interest in local races. I bet you didn't know Valley Center was home to the bacon king. Big Larry's Burgers on South Meridian won people's choice and judges' choice awards at last month's Baconfest at Hartman Arena. Larry and Heather Hall competed against other bacon-savvy cooks with their Booming Burger, a spicy mix of burger, bun, jalapeno, pepper jack cheese, bacon and Big Larry's special Boom sauce. Larry won't tell me what's in the sauce, but apparently people like it a lot. Obviously. Congratulations to the Halls for the recognition. Congratulations also are in order for another Big Larry's achievement. The restaurant just finished its seventh year of operation. In the world of small business especially the restaurant industry that's no small feat. I hope folks will continue to maneuver their way through the detours to eat at Big Larry's and other downtown restaurants. They've done us proud. Our family had a nice Easter Sunday. We ate well and everyone got along. In fact, it was a real lovefest, compared to the Easter dinner one Park City family had. Police responded to a disturbance at a Park City residence April 5, where a woman reported being in a verbal argument with her father over Easter dinner. They apparently were arguing about her getting a second helping of food, and the fact that there was not enough cake when she arrived. Food came between another local family last week. Park City officers responded to an assault on April 3 and arrested a man on a charge of domestic battery after he allegedly threw a potato at his wife and broke her nose. The wife also was arrested because she allegedly instigated the foodfight when she threw the spud at her husband, striking the back of his head. How can you top that? Well, with bacon, of course. I'm looking forward to the citywide garage sales April 10 and 11. Be extra careful when driving around this weekend, especially in neighborhoods east of the Meridian construction zone. There will be lots of extra traffic with the detours. Chris Strunk is publisher of The Ark Valley News. Reach him at 755-0821, news@arkvalleynews.com or on Facebook. |
