Cole Klinkhammer, a senior at Valley Center High School, has been awarded the Putnam Scholarship by Kansas State University. He received the $36,000 scholarship during K-State's annual Scholarship Day ceremonies Feb. 27. During that day, students and their parents were guests of the university at a banquet. Throughout the day, they attended meetings with academic deans and student life officials.

K-State Research and Extension is offering a series of three hands-on workshops April 9, 16 and 23 for any parent who wants to understand the same technology their children use every day. Presented by Det. Jennifer Wright with the Exploited and Missing Child Unit/Internet Crime against Children, the workshops will cover understanding the history of the Internet, how to investigate where information is kept on a computer and how to locate where some of the communications come from that your children receive. Cost for the three workshops is $20 total per family. You may register online at www.sedgwick.ksu.edu or by calling 660-0100. The workshops will be held at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, 21st North and Ridge Road.

The 14th annual Tree Festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 11 at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, 21st North and Ridge Road. Tree care professionals will be on hand to share their advice on choosing, planting and maintaining the best trees for this area. Seminars include appropriate topics for both the homeowner and commercial audience. Vendors will have plants and trees, and tree and garden-related products and services for sale. Garden tool sharpening service will also be available. Admission is free. Demonstrations will cover composting, rose pruning and tree planting. There will also be tours of the arboretum and the nature trail. This event is sponsored by the Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardeners and K-State Research and Extension, Sedgwick County.
