50 years ago

The April 6 Valley Center city election was less than three weeks away. Voter registrations continued at City Hall to enable those not yet registered to get their names on the books.

Jill Connolly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James V. Connolly of Valley Center and Keith Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Eugene Miller of Valley Center, were united in marriage March 6. The ceremony was held in the Connolly home by The Rev. Jerry Stroup, pastor of the Assembly of God in Valley Center. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are now residing in Valley Center.


45 years ago

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Isaac of rural Whitewater announced the engagement of their daughter, Sherrilyn Kay, to Norman J. Fisher. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Fisher of Kansas City. The bride-elect attended Tabor College, Hillsboro, and graduated from the University of Kansas. She was teaching special education in Kansas City and doing graduate work at KU. Her fiancé, also a graduate of KU, was a consulting engineer for Black and Veatch, Kansas City. A June wedding was planned.

Navy Seaman Rodney M. Minson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude F. Minson of Valley Center, underwent a period of refresher training aboard the destroyer USS Shelton in San Diego prior to a tour of duty in the Western Pacific.


40 years ago

The Valley Center Volunteer Ambulance was in service. It wasn't going to be a free service, but the rates weren't sky-high. Service was to be provided from Valley Center School District 262 (and any other area as deemed necessary) to Wichita, Newton and Halstead Hospitals.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Nutter Sr. announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Becky Nutter, to Mr. Marcus Kabler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Max E. Kabler. The bride-elect had finished two years at Friends University and was employed at Valley Rexall Drug Store. Her finance was attending Draughon's Business College and was employed at Stearman Mann Co. The wedding was to be July 5.


35 years ago

Little, if anything was accomplished at a negotiation session between representatives of the U.S.D. 262 Board of Education and the Valley Center Teachers Association (VCTA). The biggest problem seemed to be what was and what was not negotiable. Board negotiator Bob Butler said according to last year's two-year contract between the district and its teachers, only items pertaining to salary consideration would be discussed this year.

Karen and Bruce Opheim, Wichita, announced the birth of a son, Adam Van, born March 5. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces and was 21-inches long. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Roger Opheim and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Van Ert, all of Wichita.


30 years ago

The Valley Center City Council unanimously decided to offer the job of city superintendent to Lyle Malcom, who had served as interim city superintendent since January. The council members interviewed two other applicants in a special session before they called Malcom in for an interview. The interviews were conducted in executive sessions, said Mac Manning Jr., city administrator.

Jan Weaver of Newton and Gene Brown of Valley Center announced their plans for a June 22 wedding at the Hesston Mennonite Church. Parents of the couple are Milford Weaver of Hesston and the late Elaine Weaver and Earl and Edith Brown of Wichita. Weaver was a third-grade teacher in Valley Center, and Brown was employed as a design engineer for Electro-Mech in Wichita.


25 years ago

The facility planning committee's priorities for school additions and construction gained approval of the U.S.D. 262 Board of Education. The board agreed, by consensus, that the top priority was a new elementary school, preferably for grades four and five. Second on the list of priorities were additions and remodeling at the junior high, followed by additions and remodeling at the high school.

Mark and Sandra Miller, Augusta, announced the birth of their first child, a daughter, Emily Nicole, Feb. 28. She weighed 8 pounds, 15 1/2 ounces and was 21-inches long. Grandparents are Fred and Glenna Miller and Bob and Betty Kennedy, Valley Center. Great-grandmother is Mable Carter, also of Valley Center.

20 years ago

The current superintendent of Locust Grove, Okla., has accepted an offer to become superintendent of schools in Valley Center. Dr. Robert S. Neel, 48, was to assume his duties July 1. His two-year contract featured a base of $67,500, $1,500 in moving expenses and $8,200 in fringe benefits. The fringe package included $4,800 in automobile expenses, $2,000 to attend national and state conventions, and $1,400 in health insurance. The total package was worth $77,200. The moving expenses were a one-time item.

Wendy Walston and Robyn Brown II announced their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of Welda Heinrich and James Walston, both of Wichita. She graduated from Valley Center High School and was pursuing a degree in interior design. She was an assistant to the interior designer at Design Specifics, Wichita. The prospective groom is the son of Sharon Schlegel of Wichita and the late Robyn Brown. He was a drywall hanger for Drywall Systems, Wichita. The couple planned an April 22 wedding at Faith Chapel, Wichita.


15 years ago

Dan Repp had a history of health problems and underwent back surgery in 1994, but he didn't let it slow him down. In fact, Repp has sped up. The Valley Center man began running marathons two years after his surgery and now has qualified for the Boston Marathon in April. "You just keep persevering because that's the only way," said Rupp, 32. "For a marathon, you have to be physically and mentally ready."

Army Staff Sgt. Broady Hubbard arrived for duty at Camp Humphreys, Pyongtaek-Gun, South Korea. He was a personnel services specialist assigned to the Headquarters Company, 23rd Area Support Group. A 1984 graduate of Wichita Heights High School, he earned an associate's degree in 1998 from Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, Calif.

Roger Mort resigned from the Kechi City Council and withdrew from the mayor's race. Mort, who was appointed to the council in 2002, sent a letter of resignation to Mayor Ed Parker stating that recent personal difficulties created more demands on his life and that he wasn't able to give his full attention to the council.

Jeff Inman of Valley Center, formerly of Stockton, and Paula McKee of Valley Center, formerly of Wichita, announced their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect was an office manager for Aztec Building Maintenance of Wichita. The prospective groom was a truck driver for Barton Solvents of Valley Center. The couple planned an April 30 wedding at the Lion's Park gazebo and a reception at the Community Building, and will be at home in Valley Center.

Thanks to the work of a local couple and local historian, a World War II veteran was to have been properly honored. This week, the grave of Victor L. Liggett in Maple Grove Cemetery was to have been marked with a veteran's gravestone. Liggett was born in 1920 in rural Valley Center. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946 as a disabled veteran. Leggett died at age 31 in 1957. His gravesite did not have any stone or marker, and it was unclear whether there ever was one, said Vince Marshall, president of the Valley Center Historical Society.

Larry and Sarah Eubanks of Valley Center announced the birth of twins Feb. 10. Alexander Benjamin, weighed 3 pounds, 13 1/2 ounces, and Lillian Christine weighed 3 pounds, 15 ounces. The twins were welcomed home by their big sister, Isabella, 4. Grandparents are Donna Eubanks and Dr. Chuck and Mary Terrill, all of Valley Center.
