City does well with removal of snow
Last Updated: March 05, 2015

A change in procedures and the addition of equipment are creating better driving conditions during snowstorms in Valley Center.

We appreciate the city's quick and thorough response during the past few snow events. The roads have been safe and relatively easy to navigate.

A couple of years ago, the city council embarked on an effort to more efficiently handle snow removal. The city purchased equipment to mix and apply a liquid salt mixture to the major roads ahead of snowstorms.

When snow is in the forecast, city officials participate in conference calls with county emergency management folks and follow how the Kansas Department of Transportation is responding to the weather.

In the most recent snowstorm, the city began treating roads Feb. 27. On Feb. 28, crews plowed designated routes.

Pre-treating the roads prevents ice from adhering, making it easier to plow the snow.

That process saves the city money. In the short term, it doesn't take as long to plow the snow, saving on personnel costs. In the long term, the wear and tear on city streets is minimized because plowing is less difficult.

It's a win-win situation for the city and its residents.

The city rarely gets a pat on the back, but for this, it deserves one for sure.
