The Valley Center High School junior varsity wrestling team won the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League tournament Feb. 14 at VCHS.

Dallas Boone led the way for the Hornets, claiming a title at 120 pounds. Boone won an exciting 4-3 decision over Jake Shaw of Ark City in the championship match.

"I thought I wrestled good," Boone said.

Tony Sanchez came close to winning the 132-pound bracket. After pinning his way into the finals, Sanchez was pinned in the second period by Ark City's Jesse Milliron.

Chase Ramirez followed with a second-place finish at 138. After a bye, Ramirez won two close decisions, including a victory over an opponent he previously lost to. In the title match, Ramirez lost a 3-0 decision to Andover's Dylan Keplar.

"I don't know if he was a varsity (wrestler) who missed practices or something, but he was really good," Ramirez, a freshman, said of his Andover opponent. "I'm going to have to get more muscular, faster and work on my technique and I think that will give me a good place to start for next year."

R.J. Hoyt kept Valley Center's medal run going with a second-place finish at 145. Hoyt won a couple of decisions and a pin before dropping a 7-4 contest to Andover's Elijah Gordon, a former state qualifier.

"This is the highest I've placed in all my three years wrestling JV ‘state,' " said Hoyt, a junior. "That gives me more confidence going into next season. … (Coach) Shelton told me that I did really well. So, that's always nice to hear."

At 195 pounds, Tony Adams placed second. He recorded two pins to start the tournament and then won a 2-0 decision over Monroe Chrisco of Campus. Adams was pinned by John Vap of Goddard in the title match.

Chase Holle was one of just two Hornets to end the tournament with a win. Holle placed third at 220 pounds, pinning his second-round opponent before dropping into the consolation bracket to win a decision and pin Ark City's Martin Ambriz again in the third-place match.

Coby Carter was fourth at 160, Kaden Lewis fourth at 170, and Jordan Swindle fourth at heavyweight.

In its final tuneup before the postseason, the varsity wrestlers finished the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II schedule with a victory over Maize South.

Valley Center won three league duals (Andover Central, Eisenhower and Maize South) and lost three (Goddard, Andover and Ark City).

Valley Center led most of the way to defeat Maize South 42-23 on the road.

Carter Nold dropped the opening match and Michael Turkali won by forfeit. Nick Romig lost a decision at 120 before Ryan Delforge (126) and Seth Dillman (132) got two straight pins. Tyler Boone followed with a 6-0 decision at 138.

Hoyt and Jace Boone lost matches, but Sam Weldon began a string of convincing wins for the Hornets. Weldon scored a tech fall at 160, Peyton Stoffel a pin at 170, Caleb Karlowski a pin at 182 and Brett Hamm a major decision at 195.

Valley Center lost its final two matches by decision, but had a big enough lead for the dual victory.

Up next, the Hornets will head north to Salina Central for their Class 5A regional tournament Feb. 21. Action begins at 9 a.m. In addition to the Hornets, the Mustangs will host Emporia, Great Bend, Maize South, Newton, Salina South and Wichita Heights. Qualifiers from this meet will move on to the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament, Feb. 27 and 28, at Harman Arena.
