VCMS wrestlers remain perfect

The Valley Center Middle School wrestling squad continued to roll during the past week.

The Hornet junior varsity wrestlers won a tournament at Goddard Feb. 14 with a team score of 130. Second-place Hutchinson had 111 points.

Grady Gilson won the 85-pound bracket with two pins and a major decision.

Chad Banning placed fourth in the 120-pound A bracket, while Jack Bastow was first in the 120-pound B bracket.

Mitchell Trible won the 127-pound B bracket with two pins and a 4-0 decision for the title.

Coby Gresham placed second in the 134-pound A bracket.

Aaron Diehl was second at 141, losing a 6-4 decision in the title match.

Andy Alonzo was fourth at 165.

Brennon Turner battled back to place third at 165, winning the third-place match over Alonzo.

Alex Sanchez won three matches at 180 pounds. Cody Pearson also was undefeated at 215.

The Hornet varsity squad raised its dual record to 6-0 with wins over Newton (72-34) and Goddard Eisenhower (57-36) during a triangular Feb. 10 in Goddard.

Quentin Kirk improved to 7-1 with a pair of wins, including a pin against Newton, at 80 pounds.

Coby Collins followed with two wins, including a pin against Eisenhower, at 85.

Chase Faimon (90 pounds) recorded back-to-back pins.

Dillon Moler was 1-1 at 95 pounds.

Devin Delforge kept his perfect record intact (9-0) with a pair of victories at 110 pounds.

Layton Lewis also recorded two wins, both by fall, at 115 pounds.

Carson Kraus went 1-1 at 120 pounds.

Alec Flores improved to 8-1 with a pin and a 4-3 decision at 127.

Hunter Hughes controlled his two 141-pound opponents and improved to 7-1 on the season.

Ethan Mullen was 1-1 at 165 pounds.

Dale Hatfield recorded a couple of pins at 165 to improve to 7-1.

Alex Sanchez split matches at 180.

Spencer Niedens remained undefeated (8-0) at 215 pounds, scoring a 3-1 decision over Newton.

Tony Caldwell raised his record to 8-1 with two wins, including a nailbiter against Eisenhower, at 265.

Winning JV matches were Chad Banning at 120, Mitchell Trible at 134, Aaron Diehl at 134, Cameron Maltz at 148, Brennon Turner at 165 and Andy Alonzo at 165.

The Hornets competed in a double dual at Maize South Feb. 17 and will host a triangular Feb. 24. After a March 3 triangular at Prairie Hills, Valley will compete at the Pioneer League II tournament at Andover Central March 7.
