Police seek suspects in church vandalism
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: February 12, 2015

Valley Center police are looking for the suspects who snuck into a church and lit several matches in an apparent attempt to start a fire Feb. 7.

Chief Mark Hephner said the suspects entered the First Church of God building at 229 N. Ash through an unlocked window. Police found several areas of the church where matches were burned. Some of the spent matches were bundled together.

"It was obvious they were trying to light something on fire," Hephner said. "Nothing actually caught."

The suspects also shuffled through paperwork and moved other items inside the building, messing things up, Hephner said. They also took time to play ping-pong.

A microphone and a candle were damaged.

Hephner said it appears the vandalism was the work of juveniles.

Hephner said the incident took place between 12:30 and 5 p.m. Feb. 7. The church's minister notified police. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Valley Center police at 755-7325.
