In its final varsity tournament of the regular season, the Valley Center High School wrestling team had eight top-six finishers, including three who placed as high as fourth, at Rose Hill Feb. 6 and 7.

"Friday, we took our lumps," Valley Center coach Brian Shelton said. "… But then Saturday rolled around and we had the best day we've had all year long. Saturday was the best our wrestling team has looked all season and to me, that's encouraging because they're doing things they weren't doing before. We're two weeks out from regionals and if we're serious at all, this is just practice leading up to postseason, and we're right where we want to be."

At 120, Nick Romig placed fourth. The junior won his first-round match convincingly, but was sent to the consolation bracket with a 3-2 loss to Maize South's Rylan Kasitz. Romig scored a major decision before winning two straight decisions to reach the third-place match, facing Kasitz again. Romig lost another close one, 5-2.

At 126, Ryan Delforge also placed fourth. After a first-round bye, Delforge made it to the quarterfinals with a 7-1 decision over Brandon Becker of Derby. Delforge was sent to the consolation bracket with a pin. Delforge pinned Caleb Sare of Smoky Valley to get to the third-place match, where he lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Nick Ornelas of Chanute.

Seth Dillman placed fourth at 132 pounds. Dillman pinned Levi Sims of Jayhawk Linn and lost a major decision to drop into the consolation bracket, where he won three straight, including two pins, to make it to the third-place match. Dillman lost a 1-0 decision to Josh Moore of Augusta.

"It's definitely the best I've wrestled all season," Dillman said. "I haven't been able to string three wins together since last year. Just hard work. I really wanted to place there."

Jace Boone was fifth at 152 pounds and was the only Hornet to end the tournament with a win. Boone pinned Lucas Dunbar of Hutchinson in the first round, but lost a 3-1 decision to drop into the consolation bracket. Boone won two matches before losing a 7-4 decision to Andrew Pekley of Wellington. In the fifth-place match, Boone pinned Andover's Alec Stock with 49 seconds left in the first period.

"Just as a team, I think we're really picking it up," Boone said. "I think we all wrestled as well as we have all year."

Placing sixth for the Hornets were Michael Turkali at 113 pounds, Don Boone at 145, Peyton Stoffel at 170 and Cory Sibley at heavyweight.

In its final home dual of the season, Valley Center dominated Goddard Eisenhower Feb. 5 for a 54-18 victory. The Hornets have one Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II dual remaining, Feb. 12 at Maize South.

"Goddard Eisenhower is a much improved team," Shelton said. "They're up and coming in our league. … We looked pretty good. I thought there was one match that we should've won that we didn't. Other than that, we came out with a win on senior night. We recognized all of our seniors and it was a success. It's always good to win a dual in your league."

Against Eisenhower, Carter Nold suffered a loss at 106 before Valley Center ran off four straight victories, all but one by pin, to take control of the contest.

Michael Turkali (113), Romig (120) and Dillman (132) scored pins.

Don Boone (145) and Jace Boone (152) pinned their opponents to tighten Valley Center's hold on Eisenhower.

"I went out there and wrestled pretty good and came out with a pin," said Jace Boone, a senior. "I was pretty nervous with it being my last home dual."

Caleb Karlowski won a decision at 182 pounds, Brett Hamm (195) and Sibley (285) got pins and Adam Hess (220) won a 5-3 decision.

Up next, the Hornets will wrestle an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II dual at Maize South Feb. 12. The junior varsity will host a tournament Feb. 14.

The 5A regional tournament will be Feb. 21.

"I think we'll all be able to put together some good practices and do well as a team," Dillman said.

"We're wrestling our best right now, and I don't see anybody on our team who can't place in the top four at regionals and go to the state tournament," Shelton said. "We've still got goals we're trying to meet, and we're still trying to build toward that postseason. … We've had our ups and downs but we're trending in the right direction."
