Rec folks making good choices Last Updated: February 05, 2015 Whether or not you agree with what they're doing — and we're hearing fewer grumblings these days — the Valley Center Recreation Commission is doing it the right way. The rec commission's golf course project is an example of at least a couple of smart decisions. First, the rec commission is paying cash for the project. The VCRC, which is funded by property taxes collected within the Valley Center school district, has saved more than $1 million over the years that were earmarked for capital improvement projects. That means the rec commission will not borrow any money for the golf course. That's unheard of these days. Second, the rec commission board hired the right people to design and build the golf course. Wildcat Construction is building the nine-hole executive course. Wildcat built some courses you may have heard about — Auburn Hills in Wichita, Flint Hills in Andover and Colbert Hills in Manhattan. This company is the real deal. In addition, the architect who designed the course also designed Auburn Hills and several other courses across the country. To attract golfers with a variety of skills, the course has to offer an attractive yet challenging design. Of course, we won't know the outcome for at least another year, but all signs point in a successful direction. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that the golf course will attract enough participants and revenue to keep it going. That's why we encourage rec commission leaders to be diligent in their oversight of the process and to develop an operations and maintenance plan that is both aggressive and realistic. Work started on the golf course last week. You can expect to hit the links in spring 2016. — The Ark Valley News |
