VCMS boys seeded fourth in league tourney

The Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams enter the Pioneer League Division II tournament this weekend on a bit of a slide.

The eighth-grade and seventh-grade teams lost the last two games of the regular season.

The eighth-graders fell to 4-9 overall with losses to Newton and Maize. Their 3-3 league record got them a fourth seed in the seven-team league tournament. The Hornets will open against Haysville at 10 a.m. Feb. 7 at Augusta. Valley Center beat Haysville in the teams' previous meeting during the regular season.

The seventh-graders finished the regular season with a 7-6 record. They also were 3-3 in the league and got a fourth seed in the tournament. Valley will play Goddard at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 7, also at Augusta. Valley Center beat Goddard during the regular season.

The Hornets finished the regular season Jan. 29 at home against Maize and on the road against Newton Feb. 2.

Eighth grade

The eighth-grade "A" team trailed by just a point at halftime, but came up short against Maize, falling 35-29.

The two squads played to a 9-9 tie after one quarter. Maize held a 13-12 edge at the break. Valley Center took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Maize dominated the final stanza, outscoring Valley Center 16-9 for the final margin.

Trenton Driskill led the Hornets with 11 points. Kolby Keeler kicked in five. Waylon Chance and Sam Fields had four each. Erick Peach and Parker Schrater had two each.

Against Newton, Valley Center trailed 24-7 at halftime and couldn't get any closer, losing 34-17. Zach Williams had six points, Driskill five, Chance four and Schrater two.

"B" team — The eighth-grade "B" team outscored Maize in the opening quarter, but couldn't hold on down the stretch, losing 32-26.

Valley trailed 14-11 at halftime and was outscored 18-15 in the second half.

Blake Holt poured in 14 points to lead the Hornets. Colby Swift and Jeren Carter added five each. Brennan Ricks chipped in a pair.

Against Newton, Valley Center turned a two-point first-quarter deficit into a 19-15 halftime lead and continued to pour it on in the second half, winning 40-33.

Holt finished with 11 points. Ricks had eight. Storm Porter, Blayne Hightower and Swift had six each. Gavin Fitch finished with three.

The "B" team had eight wins and seven losses on the season.

Seventh grade

The seventh-grade "A" team controlled the first half, but ran out of gas in a 43-40 loss to Maize.

Valley Center jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead in the first quarter. The Hornets kept the momentum into the second quarter for a 22-11 halftime lead.

Maize came out firing in the second half, outscoring Valley Center 14-6 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the decisive fourth.

Jakob Byrne had 15 points to lead the Hornets. Bryan Rascon added nine, Caden Holle eight, Caleb Fisher four and Ray Flora and Mason Burns two each.

Against Newton, the Hornets led by one at halftime but were outscored 26-23 in the second half for the 50-48 loss. Valley Center's fourth-quarter comeback fell short.

Byrne led the Hornets with 18 points. Burns had nine. Fisher finished with eight, Holle seven, Flora four and Rascon two.

"B" team — The seventh-grade "B" team was the lone Hornet squad to record a win against Maize last week. The Hornets outscored Maize 11-3 in the first quarter and extended its lead to 17-5 at the break.

Valley Center kept it going in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 11-7 in the third quarter to keep control of the contest.

Wyatt Redburn led two Hornets in double figures with 12. Matthew Patterson added 10. Austin Wolff had six, Eli DeBaun five and Josiah Farney three.

The Hornets came out on fire against Newton, outscoring the home team 21-9 in the first half en route to a 36-17 victory.

Quintin Talbot had nine points, Wolff seven, Grady Badders six, Redburn four, Wyatt Hager three, Gandon Menges, Josh Dessenberger and Matthew Patterson two each and Justin Gulledge one.

The Hornets finished the season with an 11-4 record.
