VCMS girls split with Rose Hill and Derby
By The News staff
Last Updated: January 29, 2015

Last week, Valley Center Middle School girls played on either two or three days. All four teams played Jan. 22 at Derby and Jan. 26 at home against Rose Hill. In between those dates, both "B" teams played Jan. 24 in a tournament at Eisenhower.

Against Derby, the Hornets split along grade lines. The seventh graders won both games, while the eighth graders loss twice. In the Eisenhower tournament, Valley's eight-grade "B" team finished second and its seventh-grade "B" team was third. At home to face Rose Hill, Valley again split. Both "A" teams lost close games, but both "B" teams picked up victories.

Valley Center travels to Maize Jan. 29.

Eighth grade

Derby took a 17-3 lead after the first quarter and rolled to a 48-13 win. A trio of Hornets scored three points each: Zayda Perez, Aysia Arrowood and Kirsten Stanhope. Anna Valdez and Alyssa Turner each had two to round out the scoring.

Against Rose Hill, the Hornets led 11-5 after the first quarter, but were shut out in the second and trailed 14-11. Tied after three quarters, the Rockets nudged Valley 23-22.

"The girls played good defense which I was happy with, but we struggled with taking good shots," said coach Laura Jordan. "We didn't get the ball inside the paint to our posts and we settled on outside shots which we were not hitting. We had a couple opportunities at the end to take the lead, but again, the shots just wouldn't fall."

The Hornets were led by Alyssa Turner with nine points and Kirsten Stanhope with six. Zayda Perez had three, with Emily Breault and Aysia Arrowood tossing in two each.

"B" team — Derby blanked the Hornets in the second quarter and led 20-6 lead at halftime. The Panthers went on to win 38-17.

The Hornets had a difficult time against Derby's zone defense. They struggled to get their momentum going and dug themselves into a hole.

Sarah Schaar led the Hornets with nine points. Lydia Smith, Kristin Coon, Anna Valdez and Kaeli Gard each scored two.

At Eisenhower, the Hornets finished second. They opened against Goddard, who led 10-6 at halftime. The Hornets eased in front at the end of the third quarter, 15-11. The game went down to the wire and in the fourth quarter, Cheyenne Lisle hit a free throw within the last 15 seconds of the game to ice a 20-17 win.

Sarah Schaar had 10 points for Valley. Lydia Smith scored five, Lisle three and Kristin Coon two.

In the championship game, the Hornets had a tough time against a very athletic Augusta, falling behind 10-2 after the first quarter. Augusta went on to win 44-18.

Cheyenne Lisle, Lydia Smith and Kristin Coon all had four points each. Adding two apiece were Holly Smith, Sarah Schaar and Ashlee Lowry.

Tied 16-all with Rose Hill at halftime, Valley Center outscored the Rockets 20-13 in the second half and posted a 36-29 win. Sarah Schaar led the Hornets with 18 points.

"The girls played a great game tonight," coach Fehrenbach said. "We communicated well, moved the ball well on offense and played with a lot of intensity."

Cheyenne Lisle scored six points for Valley. Kristin Coon and Anna Valdez each had four, while Trenady Vontress and Kaeli Gard had two each.

Seventh grade

The Hornet "A" team rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 11-2, and eking out a 28-27 win.

"All of the girls played extremely hard and well tonight," coach Kaitlyn Woellhof said. "Derby had some strong post, and both Amber Haden and Kassie Kinniburgh stepped up and played great defense."

Valley was led in scoring by Ellie Shank with 10 points. Riley Ranzau added six, while Carlie Claussen had five, Amber Haden four, Kassie Kinniburgh two and Elana Schmelzle one.

The Hornets were up 14-10 at halftime, but couldn't hold off Rose Hill in the second half and lost 25-22.

"Our girls seemed slow and off their game the whole night," Woellhof said. "Rose Hill was a quick and aggressive team that worked hard the entire game."

Scoring six points each were Riley Ranzau and Ellie Shank. Kassie Kinniburgh had four, with Abbigail Wolf, Carlie Claussen and Amber Haden each adding two. The Hornets were 0 for 12 from the free-throw line.

"B" team — As with the "A" team, Valley rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Derby. The Hornets outscored the Panthers 14-6 in the fourth quarter and won 27-19. Kassie Kinniburgh scored 10 points for Valley Center.

"All the girls played tough defense tonight and helped us get a win against a very tough Derby team," coach Brianna Reyes said.

Abbigail Wolf contributed seven points, with Kait McDonald adding six, Alex Barbour two and Chloe Martens and Allie Decker one each.

Valley Center played two games in a tournament at Eisenhower and placed fourth.

Against Augusta, the Hornets played with Abbigail Wolf who the coaches kept out so she could play later in the "A" team tournament. Valley led by two going into the fourth quarter. The Orioles outscored the Hornets 6-0 in the fourth quarter and edged them 18-14. Sophia McNeil and Kait McDonald had four points each for Valley. Adding two points apiece were Haylie Breth, Deonce Anderson and Allie Decker.

In the third-place game against host Eisenhower, Valley came out strong and played hard to post a 39-12 win. The Hornets led 18-4 at halftime and added to that in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 21-8.
