VCMS girls sweep Haysville at home
By The News staff
Last Updated: January 22, 2015

The Middle School girls made the most of their one game last week. All four teams won big as the Hornets swept Haysville at home. Next up for Valley Center is a Jan. 22 trip to Derby.

Eighth grade

After racing to a 21-7 first-quarter advantage, Valley's "A" team was able to hold off Haysville in the fourth quarter for a 52-44 victory. Aysia Arrowood scored 13 points and Zayda Perez 10 as the Hornets crept above .500 for the season, improving to 5-4.

"The girls played very hard tonight and had fun," coach Laura Jordan said. "Offensively, we did a lot of great things. We attacked the basket and hit open players for good shots. The entire bench was able to play and several girls helped contribute to the … win tonight."

The Hornets' balanced scoring included eight points from Alyssa Turner, seven from Emily Breault, six from Kristen Stanhope and two each from Cheyenne Lisle, Kara Harden, Lydia Smith and Anna Valdez.

"B" team — Leading just 16-12 at halftime, Valley broke the game open with an 18-2 advantage in the third quarter to post a 38-14 win. Sarah Schaar led the Hornets in scoring with 14 points as they improved to 6-3.

"The game was close in the first half due to us not playing great half-court defense and rebounding, but we corrected those mistakes in the second half and came out holding them to two points to finish the game," said coach Melissa Fehrenbach.

Anna Valdez scored eight points, while Cheyenne Lisle, Lydia Smith and Kristin Coon scored four each. Holly Smith and Kaeli Gard each added two points.

Seventh grade

It was no contest from the get-go as the "A" team pounded Haysville 53-1. Now 6-3, the Hornets were led by Carlie Claussen and Riley Ranzau, who each scored a dozen points.

"I was happy we got to get everyone some playing time tonight," coach Kaitlin Woellhof said. "We got a chance to really work some different set plays and defenses that needed work."

Ellie Shank added nine points for Valley Center. Kassie Kinniburgh, Elana Schmelzle and Amber Haden each tossed in six points, and Abbigail Wolf had two.

"B" team — Jumping in front 10-2 after the first quarter and 18-4 at halftime, Valley Center rolled to a 34-4 win. Kait McDonald led the way with 14 points.

"The girls are having a great season," coach Brianna Reyes said of the 8-1 Hornets. "I love to see the things we work on in practice improving in our games. My starters consistently show up and play with intensity."

Chloe Martens scored six points for the Hornets, while Alex Barbour and Abbigail Wolf had four each. Haylie Breth, Sophia McNeil and Allie Decker each added two points.
