Middle school boys win three of four By The News staff Last Updated: January 22, 2015 The Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams won three of four games against Haysville on the road Jan. 15. "It was a good night for us," said Valley Center coach Josh Lee. Valley Center will resume play against a couple of non-league foes, Jan. 22 at home against Derby and Jan. 26 on the road against Rose Hill. Eighth grade Valley Center improved to 3-6 with a gutsy, 36-35 overtime victory over Haysville. "This week our theme has been ‘Don't accept losing,'" Lee said. "Our eighth-grade ‘A' team really lived up to that." The Hornets trailed 7-4 after the first quarter and 19-8 at halftime. Valley Center fought back to tie the game at 32 at the end of regulation, outscoring Haysville 24-13 in the second half. The Hornets scored with six seconds left in the extra frame to get the win. "I was really proud of the effort of our players in the game, as well as our players and parents in the stands making it feel almost like a home game towards the end," Lee said. Kolby Keeler finished with 15 points to lead the Hornets. Trent Driskill added 12. Max Fields had five, while Waylon Chance and Blake Holt had two each. "B" team — The eighth-grade "B" team started slowly but finished on top of a 31-26 victory over Haysville. Valley Center trailed 8-4 after the first quarter but led 12-10 at halftime. The Hornets outscored Haysville 19-16 in the second half. "They continue to work hard and not give up," Lee said. "Zach Williams had eight points, Hayden Brauer five, Dylan Bastian and Blake Holt four each, Jeren Carter and Brennan Ricks three each, and Gavin Fitch and Storm Porter two each. Seventh grade The seventh-grade Hornets fell to 6-3 with a 53-49 loss to Haysville. Valley Center led 10-7 after the first quarter but trailed 29-23 at halftime. The Hornets tried to come back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Haysville 21-15, but fell short. Lee said Haysville shot the ball well. Jakob Byrne had 15 points to lead the Hornets. Mason Burns finished with 11 points. Bryan Rascon had 10, Caleb Fisher six, Ray Flora and Cade Holle three each and Mason Reed one. "B" team — The seventh-grade "B" team used contributions from every player for a 31-22 victory over Haysville. The Hornets trailed by one after the first quarter, but led by one at halftime. After a tight third quarter, Valley Center outscored Haysville 14-7 in the fourth to secure the win. Justin Gulledge had eight points to lead the Hornets. Matthew Patterson finished with seven. Wyatt Redburn had five, Austin Wolff and Jace Crass four each and Josh Dessenberger three. |
